We all decided to have breakfast at McDonald's while waiting for Franco. Charlie had always been one of the boys, so I wasn't surprised that she became instant friends with Logan's crowd. Even before we sat down with our Big Breakfast meals, Charlie was already exchanging green jokes with them across the table. That gave me the time to sit down with Nicia and Gail and ask about their summer.

"Buti na lang nagkasabay ang vacation leave n'yo," I opened.

"Yup," Nicia said.

"Oo nga," Gail said.

"Sana sinama n'yo sina Ken and Dustin," I said.

"May duty si Ken e," Nicia answered before hitting "send" on her mobile phone.

"Inaalagaan niya si Rihanna (Gail's baby girl)," Gail replied as she dialed her boyfriend's number just for a 'missed call.'

They just couldn't put their phones down.

My high school best friends first met Logan's friends at our drinking party the year before, so I tried to refresh their memory by telling them who was who and what they should expect when hanging out with them in the next few days.

"It'll be fun," I said.

"Yup," Nicia replied, after taking a bite of her Sausage McMuffin and before firing off another SMS to her boyfriend.

"Yeah," Gail said after putting her fork down to use both her hands to send yet another text.

Right then and there I wondered, Am I like this when I go on a trip without my boyfriend? Do I eat, make small talk, and fiddle with my phone at the same time? Am I this rude to text while a friend is trying to talk to me? Am I incapable of having fun without my boyfriend?

I hoped not. Because honestly, it was not only rude--it was sad.
