Sam and Ana broke up.

As always, I heard it first from Nino, who overheard the two arguing over dinner just a few days after Sam walked out on me. It seemed that Sam went through Charlie's compilation after all.

Nino pestered me for details on Yahoo! Messenger. He kept sending me these disgusted smiley icons as I told him what Charlie and I saw that night in Metrowalk.

Nino: May video raw? Patingin! Dali, send mo sa 'kin! Upload natin sa YouTube.

Veronica: Tsismoso ka talaga 'no?

Nino: P*ta 'yang si Ana e. Siya pala ang two-timer tapos tibo pa pala!

Veronica: I know. But I can't send you the video. Sorry, Nino.

And then Nino sent me the loser smiley icon. Ten times.

I didn't see much of Sam after that. I was still mad at him, so I busied myself by hanging out with Charlie, who felt guilty because it was she who dug up the dirt on Ana but I took the ax for her. This time, we decided to tell the whole ad agency gang and my closest friends.

Franco: P*tang*na! Buti sana kung hot e.

Nicia and Gail: Resbakan na natin 'yan! (Promise, sabay pa sila sumigaw.)

Aki: (no comment)

Chi: Oh my God! The nerve! Did Tin go after Sam?

Jai (from New York via web cam while holding a pink ruler): Ruler na lang ang straight!

Carl: Naku. Ano'ng sabi ni Sam?

Kit: Basag na basag ang pagkalalaki ni Sam.

Nino: (Insert loser smiley icons for Veronica here)

My friends dealt with their frustrations by drinking and swearing. Honestly, I didn't feel like partying. They broke up, I thought. Still, Sam and I weren't talking. It had been days since I last saw him, and honestly, I was purposely trying to avoid him. I didn't feel like talking yet.

That night, when I got home, Sam was still up watching Friends on DVD. It was past 4 o'clock in the morning.

"Ana and I broke up." That was the first thing he said when he saw me enter the condo.

"I know," I said. "Nino told me."

"You were right," he said. "She was bisexual. She admitted everything, by the way, and told me you meant well."

I don't care, I thought.

"I saw the video," Sam continued, "and listened to the audio files."

I told you, I thought.

"I was shocked, V. It really was a slap on my ego, what you found out. I'm sorry if I took it out on you, lalo na 'yung pag-quit mo sa law school."

"No worries," I said. "I did quit, 'di ba?"

"Yeah," he said standing up from the couch. "Sayang. You would have made a good lawyer."

I simply had to smile. For the longest time, his approval meant so much to me, just like how a child waits for Mom to tell her what a good girl she is.

That night, Sam opened a bottle of red wine and poured each of us a glass. It had been such a long, long time since we last sipped wine there, overlooking the Ateneo campus.

"We have each other's back," he lifted his glass to his mouth. "Just in case you want to know, I never forgot."

"I know that," I said and took a sip of the red wine. "Besides, I'm still here."

He placed his arm around my shoulders and we watched the dawn break. It was beautiful.

"I missed this," I said.

"Me too."

By the time we finished drinking, the Friends opening song was playing on the TV in our small living room.

"I'll be there for you / When the rain starts to pour / I'll be there for you / Like I've been there before / I'll be there for you / 'Cause you're there for me, too."
