Sam Hates Babysitting

“Sure ka okay ka lang dito?” one of the guys said. “Masikip dito baka ma-tyansingan ka. Dun ka na lang sa mga pambababe.

“No, okay lang ako,” I said positioning myself right in front of the spot where the doors of the MRT would open. “Dito na lang ako para magkakasama tayo.

Of course, I didn’t tell them that I was deathly scared of getting lost. What if I was the last to get off? What if I missed my stop? It was almost 7PM when we reached Buendia Station and everyone knew what that meant: rush hour.

When the train arrived and the doors opened, the guys made sure I got in first. True enough, it was so crowded I was almost breathing into a stranger’s neck. The train lurched and we all jiggled like sardines.

Two guys took off at Shaw Boulevard and two at Ortigas. Sam and I were the only ones left. The train was mercifully half-empty by the time we left Ortigas. We stood almost face to face. He was so quiet, lost in his thoughts as he watched the world pass by through the windows. I didn’t say anything.

We took off at Cubao station. Outside, Sam and I had to go our separate ways. He had to take a bus home while I had to take a shuttle to Katipunan. He waved goodbye and walked toward the flight of stairs that would take him to EDSA. I was left standing in one corner. Yes, I didn’t know where to find the damn shuttles.

Perhaps he looked behind and saw me standing in a corner, looking for the nearest security guard so I could ask for directions. The next thing I remember was him taking my hand and dragging me toward this godforsaken mall.

“Gah! I hate babysitting!” I heard him mutter.

He didn’t say anything during the walk from this mall to another until I found myself in Aurora Boulevard.

Saan ka ba bababa?” he asked. It was the first time he looked me straight in the face. Gee, what gorgeous eyes you have, I thought.

“Katipunan,” I answered.

Alam mo na umuwi from there?”

I nodded.

It was almost 8PM and Cubao was still alive with so many commuters, barkers, and drivers who were all eager to get the trip over with so they can all go home.

I was feeling more and more helpless and embarrassed because Sam was obviously babysitting a 22-year-old girl who had no idea how to get home from work. He looked pissed so I didn’t dare make small talk. He helped me flag down an FX. Before I got in, I thanked him profusely. He simply nodded and walked toward EDSA where he would take another ride home.

I was sitting in the middle part of the public vehicle, patiently waiting for one more passenger to fill the space. Before we drove away, I craned my neck to see if he had left. I was surprised to see that Sam was still there. Good thing the windows were tinted and he didn’t see my expression. The driver hit the gas and we sped away. He stood there for a good five seconds more before he turned around and walked away.
