Sam, My Security Blanket

It was Sam who carried me on his back as my own going-away party dragged itself to the nearest Starbucks. In my half-numb state, I remember hearing someone order a Cafe Americano as Sam soothed the harried sobs I didn’t realize I was venting. I remember being hugged and rocked back and forth until my steaming coffee arrived in a small, white cup. Someone was on the phone—my phone—calling my parents for a ride home.
When my parents drove in front of the cafe, it was Sam and another female friend who helped me into the backseat. My dad, who thought Sam worked in the cafe because of his black shirt and khakis ensemble, thanked him for helping his daughter in the car and tipped him with a 50-peso bill. I watched all these with my eyes half-closed, amused. Sam was too stunned to react.
The week following my despedida, Sam gave me back the 50-peso bill and did a play-by-play of my night of shame starting with my hair reeking of mojos and tartar sauce. Needless to say, his gestures that night have become the solid arguments of most office gossip that failed to cease long after I left. And it was because of this memory that Sam had become highly protective of me.
Ironically, he never tells me what to do. He simply listens to me—regardless of time, date, place, and circumstances—till I don’t make sense anymore. And for quite some time now, our conversations revolve around my highs and lows with Matt. This is the reason I’m confident about my place in Sam’s world—because he knows that it has always been, and will always be, Matt.

15. You're a winner V, Sam is your security blanket. You're so lucky! Why is that you're still into Matt? I think kc hindi mo pansin si Sam kasi you know na he's always ther for you, si MAtt once in a blue moon lang kung mag pakita sayo. Ang mga girls talaga.
