Silence Falls After His Big Reveal

Silence could mean a lot of things. It could mean yes or no. Or maybe.

Silence could also mean “Wait, I’m thinking.”

Silence.

It’s been two full weeks now since Eastwood. Dee and Claire declared a holiday on their bad cop and bad cop routine after two straight days of trying to get me to talk, smile, rant, or, God forbid, blink goo-goo eyes again. Even our normally loud HR officer feigned laryngitis when all the confusion and irritation registered on my face the week following Eastwood.

It ended just like any other date. We watched the soft rain in silence, sipped coffee automatically, and stood up when it’s time to go. He drove zombie-like toward our house in Quezon City and pecked my cheeks before he drove away…as I looked out in the pouring rain.

I never explained the sudden change in temperature (and on my Friday Dress-Down Attire for that matter) to Dee or Claire. I never shared with them what Matt told me. How could I ever make them understand, anyway? Taking a page from Dee’s mindset, there was nothing between us. Nada. Zilch. Ergo, I shouldn’t be feeling hurt…right?

But I do and I can’t explain it. And his silence irritated me even more. He loves Stacy until now, that’s not difficult to understand; so where do I stand? Did we even date? Or was it an innocent get-together of old friends? What was the kiss all about?

Days passed without a word from him. I tried (because I must) busy myself with work. Two full campaigns and product launches were enough to steer my murderous creativity toward something else…for a while. Dee used my frozen state to her advantage and had gotten used to dropping design deliverables on my work station every hour on the hour. And Claire, who recently found out that I am a Journalism graduate, started asking me to help her with copywriting because, as she puts it, “Kailan ka pa magsisimula magsulat, day?!

Angst, as I have learned, is good motivation for writing.
