Standing Up For Something

Tweet actually offered me a rare chance to work under one of the biggest names in the copywriting industry, under a brand known around the world. She told me about it at the time I was trying to decide whether to drop a project I was working on last December. On top of that, I was also trying to decide whether I should finally join the family business full time. These all happened early in January. I was so stressed that I aged five years in a month’s time.

Tweet’s offer was a rare one, and it was being offered to me on a silver platter. I would have grabbed it, but that would mean going back to the industry I have decided to let go. When I resigned from the agency, I told myself that I would focus more on publishing. If I accepted Tweet’s offer, it would mean acting against my decision, which could say a lot about my word. Instead of moving forward, it would mean making a U-turn and starting in the middle of the road again.

And so I ended up saying no to both opportunities. I let go of the side project I began working on last December and learned not to work for them again, even if they take me around the country for free. I don’t need to work in a company to do that.

I also declined Tweet’s offer, but only after explaining to her why and thanking her profusely for offering it to me. I am, after all, but a fan and a stranger who’s lucky enough to meet her for coffee that afternoon.

“Good to see that you know what you want and don't want right now in terms of your career,” Tweet said. “How old did you say you were?”

And just like that I surprised myself. At 25, I finally know what I want and I’ve learned not to be blinded by anything that glitters like gold. At this age, there are many shiny things that will come your way. Years ago, I would have advised people to try anything, make changes, and take risks. But that’s for people who are in their early 20s.

When you’re a quarter of a century old, you should be able to make better choices based on what you already know; at 25, you should have an idea what works and what doesn’t. You should be able to know which friends you want to keep and who are just there to suck you dry. You should know that some opportunities are more of a burden than a gift, and you should have the courage and the conviction to choose not to grab them.

Being a jane of all trades has its perks, but having vision and direction have great advantages. When you’re 25, you should be standing up for something; otherwise, you might just fall for anything.
