Remember Al? The boy I hit with the car door? I could never really remember how it started, but soon, everyone was teasing me about him. (Not that I didn’t want to remember; maybe I just did a damn good job of erasing him from memories of my past that I really can’t remember it now.) I liked him since first year high school, all because I thought he was cute.

When you’re a teenager and you make the honest mistake of telling one of your friends that you think this guy is "cute," your little comment would spread like wild fire, and by the end of the day, even your teachers would know that you have the biggest crush on a certain boy. That was what happened to me in freshman year, all thanks to Nicia by the way.

But, I survived the first two years of high school in one piece anyway.

When junior high started, Nicia and Mai caught the eyes of two upperclassmen who courted them to their hearts’ content. Back then, our generation was big on teddy bears and fancy silver jewelry. It didn’t take too long for those two to get their first “that’s sooooo high school” silver rings, complete with fake diamonds. Before class started, they would sneak into a secluded hallway, just behind the last locker, and make out, virgin teenager-style: a kiss here, a kiss there, hickeys everywhere.

Before chemistry started, I would call them on their mobile phones so they could get to class on time. When I found out that it was Nicia who accidentally started the rumor that I had the hots for the principal’s nephew, I didn’t call them to class one morning. Oblivious to the fact that class had started when they walked in looking harassed and all red from the chin down, our bitchy chemistry professor sent them straight to the principal’s lair.

They got suspended for a week and hated me for almost the rest of the school year. You see, suspension was quite a big deal back then, and when you’re studying in a Christian school, it’s mortifying to have the school call your parents and say “Hey, your daughter skipped class to make out, tsk, tsk, that's why she's suspended.” When you get suspended for that kind of reason, it’s fate worse than death.
