That Useless "Pwede Bang Manligaw?" Question

Even though it wasn't mine, the summer before senior year of high school reeked of bad romance, and this lingered long after classes resumed. Come to think of it, I never had a vacation before senior year. My parents enrolled me in one of those review schools for college entrance exams, so instead of going to beach resorts and getting a tan, I ended up going to review classes and trying to stay awake for as long as I can. I dreaded that summer, but the torture paid off when I passed my CATs. But, what made that summer really unforgettable was finding out how Jed really felt about me.

That summer before senior high school was a blast. I had my best friends back, I had a new guy best friend out in the open, and I had a newly dumped Al in the playing field once more. It was Gail who told me about Al's break-up a week before classes started. I had forgotten the when, why, where, and how because I made it a point to just focus on the what: Al was single again and that was all that mattered.

One day, after Jed walked me through a tough level in an RPG game over the phone, I started talking about Al. I kept yapping and yapping, not caring if he was even really listening, but after five minutes of nonstop gabbing, I finally realized that something was wrong.

"May problema ba?" I asked.

"Binasted na naman niya ako,"
Jed answered.

He didn't need to say her name. I already knew who he was talking about.

When I was in high school, asking someone out for coffee meant asking someone out to drink coffee. Halika, inom tayo ng kape, period—if you know what I mean. But, back then, you couldn't just ask a girl out to have coffee or watch a movie with you unless she said yes to the most gasgas line in the history of Filipino courtship: "Pwede bang manligaw?" Eww.

Okay, okay, so maybe back then I did believe in the whole "miss, pwede bang manligaw" thing. At least nagtanong, 'di ba? But what happens when a girl says "yes"? Does her answer immediately give the guy a half-baked assurance that he will win her heart eventually? What happens when she says "no"? Does her negative answer signal THE END? Ganon na lang? 'Di na ba ipaglalaban nung lalaki 'yung feelings niya? What happened to perseverance, man? When you like someone, why can't you just show her how determined you are instead of asking that useless question first?

But, yes, back then you couldn't just ask someone out for coffee for two reasons: one, we weren't big on Starbucks or any gourmet coffee shops yet; and two, we lived on our student's allowance. So back then, the guys really had to ask that stupid question. On a positive note, at least we knew where they stood, right? However, Nicia's clarity also made me see just where I stood in all that high school frenzy. Finally, I knew just what Jed thought of me.
