Ever since Nicia dumped Jed in freshman year, he had been asking her the same question year after year: "Pwede ba akong manligaw?" During the first few months of the new school year, Jed would offer his heart on a silver platter and Nicia would go (Twisted) Cooking Mama on him and grab, gut, and chop his teenage heart. Year after year, my guy friend's heart would go "bopis" right before our eyes. I really never cared about it before, but until Jed and I became friends, I never realized just how much it would affect me.

In Nicia's mind, Jed already had his chance. He had chosen not to follow through years ago. For her, he had missed the train to Hogwarts; yet, Jed continued to stand between Platforms 9 and 10 long after the passageway had closed. The poor guy never learned. He just kept bumping and bumping into the solid wall.

I always knew it. Long before he asked the question, I already knew what she would say. But today, I felt the need to talk to him somehow. After pressing the pause button on the game console, I told him what I knew: that he should have asked her straight away in freshman year. I also told him that Nicia was then head over heels in puppy love with a lowerclassman. Lastly, I told him that Nicia only saw him as a friend, a classmate, nothing more, and nothing less. And just because I had gotten to know what he's really like, I told him truthfully: "You're a nice guy and, well, you're better off without her. You'll find someone else."

Back then, I was his closest female friend and probably the first one to tell him all these things straight from the mouth of the opposite sex. Despite the fact that we were on the phone, I took his silence as a sign of normalcy. But, I was wrong. His silence was the calm before the storm.
