What—?!

Wait, what did we do? I thought.

Archer and I met again the following day to catch a movie at TriNoma in Quezon City. We were on our way to the mall when a call came from an unfamiliar number. I answered his phone and put it on speaker mode. It was Joana's male cousin on the other line, and he shouted his threat over and over. Archer turned different shades of pale the moment the cousin mentioned that Joana was rushed to the emergency room the previous night. We were nearing EDSA when I saw the blood drain from Archer's face and his knuckles turned white.

"Bakit, ano'ng nangyari?" I asked when the caller paused to catch his breath.

"Ikaw pala 'yung Beronika ah," the guy said.

By then, Archer had been rendered inarticulate. From the looks of him, he was stunned by what he heard over the speaker phone: the possibility that Joana might die or the two of us being hunted down, I didn't know which one scared him more.

"Wait lang, wait lang," I quickly said when the guy wouldn't stop cursing over the phone.

As we made our way back to Archer's house in Timog, half of me was terrified about what was happening. A girl whose face I had never seen just overdosed on sleeping pills...all because Archer chose me. Logically speaking, it wasn't really my fault, but if you're in that particular moment, you can't help feeling partly at fault.

Joana was rushed to the hospital...and yet, the law student inside of me urged me to probe.

When we got back to Archer's place, the guy called again. Archer answered it this time and Joana's cousin continued his death-threat tirade. When I realized that Archer couldn't get a single word in edgewise and was as pale as a ghost, I grabbed his phone and demanded to talk to someone else who was at the hospital. The phone went dead.

A few minutes later, the now-familiar number called again, but this time, it was someone else on the other line.

"Sino 'to?" I asked.

"Si Jerome 'to, pinsan ako ni Joana," the other guy answered. From his voice, I figured he was probably still in high school.

"Jerome, I'm really sorry sa nangyari kay Joana," I started.

Financial help?" Wrong move. I shouldn't have offered to help with the payment, but it was too late when I realized what I had just said.

"Puwede rin," Jerome answered. "Wala talaga kaming pambayad dito sa ospital."

"Nasaang ospital ba kayo?" I asked, pressing for details, but before I could ask Jerome how we could send money from Manila to Cavite, someone grabbed the phone.

"Nandito kami ngayon sa Cavite Medical Center!" The other cousin answered.

The guy repeated this death threat for the third time. I ended the call and turned off the phone to regain my composure for a while. I turned to Archer who was sitting at the sofa as still and as white as a ghost.

What do we do now? I thought.
