The Girl Who Changed Matt Forever

There was a ring.

Stacy was Matt’s precious little thing.

He courted Stacy for almost a year before becoming a couple in senior year of college. Their relationship survived a great deal of rumors that revolved around Matt’s little black book and youthful escapades. Ironically, Stacy was Matt’s first serious relationship. Honestly.

Their first breakup was the result of a nasty rumor about Matt seeing someone else on the sly, something that later turned out to be true. They got back together eventually, but quietly this time. Matt and Stacy kept their relationship away from the scrutinizing eyes of their respective circles that not even their closest friends knew; Stacy disappeared completely from cyberspace.

“She disappeared?” I asked in between his narrative.

“You don’t know how the people around me think, Veronica,” he explained. “I deleted Stacy’s online profiles.”

I blinked.

Their relationship was on and off; their breakups revolved around the same reason: Matt loved girls. They lasted more than three years, and then Stacy got tired.

“I didn’t know that I was slowly losing her,” Matt said. “I thought…I…when we broke up the second time, I finally decided not to fool around for good. There were just too many distractions during those years.

“I wanted to settle down so I bought her a ring, Veronica,” he continued. “The one she always wanted. But she didn’t take it. I got hurt. I got mad. We didn’t talk for weeks but I realized I couldn’t live without her…

“The last time we met, I told her I would wait, and I know I would, no matter how long, until she’s ready. I told her I would never fool around again. Do you know what she told me, Veronica? She said she’s tired and she’s not in love with me anymore. There was no one else. She just got tired…

“So I said let’s start again, wait until we feel we’re in love with each other again. She said okay. I thought everything was okay, but she never talked to me again after that day. She wouldn’t take my calls or reply to my messages. She wouldn’t see me anymore. I drove to her house everyday but they kept telling me she’s not home. Even our friends kept her from me. Whenever I asked about her, they would become quiet then stir the conversation to something else. I was getting desperate. Four months later, Aldrich told me she went to the States.”

Silence.

“I never got her back.”

I didn’t know what to say because I wasn’t expecting it to be this complicated. We sipped our coffee in silence, just like that time in Eastwood. It wasn’t raining, though, but a flood of emotions swept me away it rendered me spineless for a while. He dropped me off at our house and promised to call soon.

I was tired but something was nagging me. Curiosity prevailed and I called Aldrich, who was also a trusted friend. I didn’t tell him what Matt confessed to me but when I asked what was Stacy was like, he laughed politely and said: “She looks like you.”
