In Final Fantasy VIII, which is one of the most celebrated Role Playing Games (RPG) in PlayStation history, the gamer must gather a list of items in order to upgrade a particular weapon. Moreover, in every RPG, there's always a list of side quests that a gamer must accomplish before leveling up.

Recent studies and surveys have shown that there are relatively more male gamers than female ones. The same surveys show that the average age of gamers is 35. In the Philippines alone, we are witness to how many eligible men participate in toy and gaming conventions. If these men can spend so much money, time, and effort in upgrading their weapons up to the best and final one, getting the best set of character settings, and Googling a set of cheat codes and walkthroughs so they can finish the game, why can't they exert the same effort in pursuing a real relationship with real-life Rinoa/Tifa /(insert name of a hot female character here)?

In the gaming world, there is always a challenge to conquer, and each mission accomplished earns the gamer a bragging right. So maybe men are really after the challenge of it all, and if they can do it using a joystick (no pun intended), then they can do it in real life where the prize is even better. Riiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiight?

It was with this realization that I decided to give my curly-haired gamer a challenge before he could get me. But instead of giving him a list of items he must gather, I gave him a list of quests he must conquer. I gave him The List.

The List

1. Take me to Tagaytay to eat Colette's Buko pie.
2. Take me to the Pyrolympics and kiss me while the sky lights up with fireworks.
3. Take me to a place where I can look at the stars through a telescope.
4. Take me to a great place where I can get a great view of the city skyline.
5. Meet my family.

Our deal was pretty simple: He had exactly two months to do every single item I wrote on The List. Once accomplished, I would, officially, become his girlfriend. Otherwise, our dating exclusivity agreement would be null and void and our dating status would roll back to zero, and he would have to do The List all over again.

When I explained this to Logan, it took him a while to agree to my terms and he made me swear that I was not allowed to date anybody else for the entire length of the quest. And in the spirit of sportsmanship and game play, we signed a piece of tissue paper from Dairy Queen to seal our agreement.

I knew that I was being weird and probably a wee bit crazy for conjuring something this childish. But I was determined to give Logan a hard time to get my answer. Our friends had all been waiting for the two of us to officially become a couple. "Ano pa bang hinihintay n'yo?!" was their most common question at that time. I have heard a lot of kilig stories about two people finding each other and falling in love by accident. Logan and I were one of those couples, but we wanted to be a little different by giving the common falling-in-love-by-accident a lot more flair.

Maybe some of the things I wrote on the list were farfetched and totally crazy. Maybe I scared him off by being too demanding. Maybe I'd gone over the edge. Maybe I'd gone mad.

It would be months before I would write my controversial movie review of Alice in Wonderland on my personal blog, but one of the movie's famous lines seems to be perfect for that particular time in the past. They say it takes real lovers to be silly, and just like the Mad Hatter's secret, all the best people are crazy.

So maybe we were crazy.
