The Perfect Birthday Gift For Sam

BB041012M.jpgWe would have stayed at the restaurant 'til the wee hours of the morning to party, but Ana's uniformed guests had to turn in early. After the party, I took a cab and spent another night at Charlie's.

Days passed and soon I was back to my old ways: dating and sneaking into Sam's kitchen to steal fries and ice cream. One time, Ana caught me.

"Hey Veronica, what are you doing here in the kitchen?" she asked as if she owned the restaurant.

"Uh, eating?" I answered. "I always sneak in here for dessert."

"Does Sam know you're here?"

I didn't like the tone of her voice.

"He always knows."

"Well, he's outside, and I don't think he knows you're here," she said.

I ignored her. She walked around the kitchen.

"Do you know where Sam keeps the chocolate syrup?"

"Here," I handed her the Hershey's chocolate syrup beside me.

"Thanks," she said, and sat next to me on the kitchen counter. Buti na lang stainless steel 'yung counter, I thought.

"Malapit na ulit monthsary namin," she started. "I'm always giving him shirts kasi. I'm thinking of giving him something different this time. Ano ba ang gusto ni Sam na regalo?"

Before I answer that, let me correct you: there's no such term as "monthsary" in the English language, dumbass! You're a teacher, right? Whatever are you teaching kids these days?! The term "monthsary" is a shortened version of a month-long anniversary. When you want to celebrate a special day of the month, you say it as "Happy nth month anniversary" not "Happy nth monthsary."

Of course, I didn't say that.

"He likes music," I answered.

"Ah, talaga?" she said. "What kind? R&B?"

"Hell, no!" I exclaimed. "We both hate Ne-Yo and all that R&B crap. He's a big fan of Pearl Jam."

"Ano ' yun?"

"It's an American alternative rock band," I answered, trying to hide my sarcasm--in vain.

"I see," Ana said. "I guess I'll just get a copy of their album."

Ana turned to go, and I continued to eat my dessert. But right then and there, I, Veronica Matilda (surname deleted) decided to shed my fangs and be an angel for a while.

"Ana, actually there's this one thing Sam wants the most," I said. "Sam has really wanted this particular guitar for the longest time now...”

But when their "whatever month anniversary" came, Ana still gave him a Pearl Jam album and saved the Gibson Les Paul guitar for Sam's birthday. I was supposed to give him that on his birthday, but I let his special girl get the honors. On Sam's birthday, I had to settle for the third best thing: Pearl Jam's first album, Ten.

I guess this is something I just have to get used to—Sam being with another girl. If Ana makes Sam happy, then I'll just have to live with it. Because I guess that's what friends do.
