The Snob And The Jackass

Truth is, I don’t even know why I bother to keep in touch. He wasn’t even my type. Who in God’s name would crush on the lanky boy who entered the classroom of Eng101 sporting the darkest pair of sunglasses (the room was air conditioned) and enough bling-bling to make him sparkle? Well, every girl in our class, apparently. In my naive college eyes, he was just this jackass suffering from too much pep.
Oddly, it took me nearly five years to lift the anti-jackass ban I imposed on myself back in college. Or maybe I just didn’t want to be one of “those girls” who talked about him during free period. In the span of four straight semesters we shared as classmates, I talked to him only once—when I gave him his part in the group assignment we were given. That was that.
Come senior college, I almost forgot about the lanky boy who wore sunglasses inside the classroom, until the day he sent me a private message asking if I was the same snob who pushed our group assignment right under his nose.
“You know, some people are afraid of you,” he told me, during the first few YM conversations we had in senior year.
“Really? Last time I checked, I don’t have fangs,” the bitch replied.
“Haha, no, it’s more like you have a sharp tongue,” he answered. “So, I take it you don’t care what people say about you?”
I thought about it and typed “Depends who’s talking. If they’re not my friends, they can talk all they want, I don’t care.”
Silence. I reached for a piece of Mrs. Field’s Chocolate Chip Cookies and nibbled nervously. Why did I feel anxious about his reply? When did I start caring what this jackass thinks of me?
“You’re genuine. You may be a snob, but underneath that tough cookie act, I sense you’re a marshmallow.”
Since then, the jackass became my confidante.
