"There's A Fine, Fine Line Between Love And A Waste Of Time..."

fineline_main.jpgI should have taken that as an omen, a warning, a red alert, but I didn't. I had no idea that tonight, all the fine lines protecting my sanity would be broken in a single strike.

How I wish I had ditched Franco right after the play ended. If only I made a mad dash out of the theater and into the cold Makati night, I wouldn't have seen them. But I did.

He was wearing a brown shirt underneath a black jacket, khaki pants, and a pair of white Nike sneakers. He was sporting a shorter version of the same hairstyle and the same confident swagger just like the time I first saw him in Greenbelt after five long years.

And yet...there was something different about him. Gone were the manly stubble and dark aura. Instead, he looked like a man with a renewed sense of purpose...a man reborn...a man with a significant other.

She came from somewhere near the left side of the small auditorium. She was wearing the simplest pair of skinny jeans and the simplest green shirt. Her face bore no sign of make-up, not even a hint of lip balm, and her hair was tied in the simplest of ponytails. And yet, despite being a Plain Jane in an ocean of eccentric people, she had the air of an artist, of submissiveness, of nonchalance.

I stood there, stunned as the scene was unfolding right before me. She walked demurely to where Matt was standing and subtly took his hand. They walked to the souvenir table just as the cast arrived at the lobby. Carla Guevara was singing a few lines from Kate Monster's single, "There's a fine, fine line."

I didn't think he saw me. My feet retreated to the more secluded area, while my friend, Franco, took some photos for the review he would be writing. I just stood there and pondered how irony could be my middle name. Her face was so familiar because she was no stranger...I had seen her before. Her name was Gia, my ex-boyfriend's previous girlfriend. Destiny sure has a wicked sense of irony.

It rained on our way home.

"What a tangled web I weave," I thought. "You win. I give up."
