"Purpose, it's that little flame that lights a fire under your ass."

Princeton, the lead character in Avenue Q, was right. That's what purpose is. Whether you know what your purpose is or not, it keeps you moving. I envy those who claim to know it right from the start and actually end up being what they said they would be back in kindergarten.

I thought of becoming an architect when I was a kid because I was always good at drawing. I would design and create things, and even today, I still paint. At some point, I wanted to be an astronaut, an interior designer, an Olympic figure skater, a psychologist, a lawyer, a pastry chef, a hot female drag racer, and for a brief period in my late teens, I wanted to be a singer.

I wanted to be a lot of things but I never once thought of being a writer. And yet, here I am, a writer. Ironically, when I became a writer, I still felt lost and didn't know what I wanted to do in the long run. But the moment my eyes were opened to the wonderful world of publishing, things changed.

Here's what knowing your purpose does to the psyche: it makes everything else recede into the background. And once you do find your purpose, consider yourself one of the luckiest women in the world; there's really nothing worse than feeling directionless.

In the end, here I am, still designing and creating things. Not buildings and roads though, but something even better: mindsets. I help build backbones, and just like what my friend Tweet Sering wrote a few years back, "The best way to change the world is to change mindsets and nothing better does that than creating power stories."

Well, what do you know? Partly, I still ended up being an architect but of a different kind.
