V, Somebody's Getting Worried

Of course, Sam’s worried. Sam, my closest, most trusted (and have I mentioned good-looking?) guy friend—a rising chef—who has been the most patient shock absorber of all my rants, musings, dreams, and disappointments since time immemorial.
Despite his I-don’t-give-a-damn attitude and semi-selfishness, he’s always worried, bordering on defensive, when it comes to me and my marshmallow heart. And this gesture, this sort of protection he throws on me like a security blanket, is something not even our closest friends could ever understand. We’ve been teased, paired, and even stalked until we hopefully get tired, raise the white flag, and admit that there is something going on between us. But we never cried mercy because there’s nothing to confess, is there?
Sam knows my story, way back to the Cary episode. He was there when I called it quits with Cary, quit my first job, and got drunk on San Mig Light and Red Horse beer during my own despedida at some bar in Glorietta a year ago.
“Am I really that ugly Sam?” was my opening, the first few lines of the now common rant.
“Ayan ka na naman e,” Sam said, peeling my fingers off the bottle of Red Horse I held in my hands. “You’re not ugly, Veronica, and you know it. Stop being such a brat and quit drinking already, you’re drunk na.”
“If I’m not ugly, then why did Cary do that to me?!” I nearly yelled that most of our old officemates stopped to look at me. I kept spitting line after line of my heartbroken rants in straight English, a sure sign that I was drunk. I remember snatching Sam’s San Mig Light and chugging it all down in one breath.
I was getting more and more dizzy, the room was swirling, and my eyes were glazed with the alcohol. I remember raising a bottle (Sam’s or mine) to my mouth for another sip of beer when I heard a soft thud. The last thing I remember seeing was Sam in full panic mode as my forehead hit the wooden table, my long brown hair a big mess over the plate of mojos.
