Waiting In Vain

“V, if you stay here another minute, you’ll die. Come on, let’s go.”

“He’s on his way, Dee.”

“That’s what you said two hours ago!”

Silence.

“He’ll be here,” I said. He should be.

Blaring techno, hazy cigarette smoke, high heels, and booze—it’s just another Friday night in Greenbelt 3. I looked around, eyeing the approaching group of pimple-faced teenagers of the Bench generation all too eager to spend their parents’ hard earned cash at Red Box. They stopped and waited for another group (this time, girls who had too much air time of Gossip Girl Season 2) to join them before happily drinking in the gimik scene.

How can everybody be this nonchalant? Don’t they know that I’m suffocating to death here and I’m about to meet my college batch’s resident jackass after five long years?

“You should have bought your nebulizer,” Dee, my boss and closest friend (buti na lang) said, positively alarmed when she saw that my eyes were tuning a scary shade of red.

“I don’t have asthma,” I said standing up. “I’m just allergic to cigarette smoke. Whoever thought it’s this polluted here? Hahaha...”

My laughter died down when I saw her nostrils flare. I cleared my throat, mumbled something unintelligible, and ran to the nearest candy store to buy a pack of mints.

It’s almost midnight. That asshole—we were supposed to meet at 10PM in front of Figaro in Greenbelt 3, right after my company-sponsored dinner in Bollywood. Seeing Dee’s impatience sneaking into the surface and mixing with her reluctance to leave her prized artist alone to wait in the midst of busy Greenbelt 3, I’ve decided to fake it.

“Dee, he’s parking the car in Glorietta 2 na raw. I’ll just wait for him inside Figaro okay?”

Dee gave me a knowing look, two sets of take-care instructions that would put my mother to shame, and an intro to Monday’s he’s-late-you-should-have-left speech. I gave her a genuine hug, thankful for the company, and pretended to fiddle with my phone until she’s out of sight.
