At 9 o’clock in the morning, Sam, with his bushy eyebrows on rebel mode, looked like a child to me. He smelled of sleep and his right cheek bore reddish pillow marks. With his sous-chef holding the reins at the restaurant, Sam was able to linger a little longer with me that Saturday morning.

“What are you doing today?” he asked.

“Shopping,” I said. “I need to pick up a few things at the mall. A shoe rack maybe.”

“I thought you wanted those transparent shoe boxes?”

“Yeah,” I answered. “But just imagine how dangerous it is for me every morning to decide on what shoes to wear.”

“Shoe avalanche,” Sam said with a laugh.

“I know.”

“First things first,” he said. “Bumili ka muna ng wallpaper para matakpan na natin 'yung glass wall.”

Have I mentioned that my room has transparent walls that make me feel like a gold fish? The previous owner of the unit probably intended for it to be an office of some sort. Sam used the room as storage before I came to live with him. Everyone who wandered into the condo gets a clear view of my room and its entire contents. I needed some wallpaper…fast.

Later that day, Sam went to the restaurant while I went to the mall. I got some neat striped wallpaper (no floral patterns, please) for the glass walls, some washing detergent, and clothes pins for my intimates. Sam didn’t have any detergent or clothes pin at the condo. In fact, his small washing machine at the laundry area was just gathering dust because he never used it, not even once. Sam can't do laundry. He sends everything down to the Laundromat at the building’s ground floor.

Gail and Nicia met me for lunch at this quaint spaghetti house in Galleria. Over pasta and paninis, they kept hounding me about what it’s like to live with a guy.

“Lesson number one: always wear a bra,” I said. And I told them about that morning’s episode with Nino and Sam cooking in the kitchen, when I walked in wearing a shirt, a pair of shorts, and nothing else.

“What’s Sam like?”

“Is he cute?”

“He cooks?!”

“He’s a chef, right? So, you’ll survive.”

“Is he old?”

“He’s your hot best friend right? So you’re together now? As in together together?”

“No action yet?! Is he gay?”

These are just few of the many questions they badgered me with. The last one was from Gail, who couldn’t believe my platonic relationship with someone hotter than anyone she has ever dated.

“The only action I get is settling in,” I replied sarcastically. “Oh wait, I think we’re getting some action tonight. We’re putting up some wallpaper in my room because I look like a gold fish inside my glass bowl bedroom.

“How many times do I have to tell you that we’re just friends?” I asked again.

They were silent for a while.

“Do you have a picture?” Nicia grabbed my bag and fished for my wallet.

“Yeah, is he gay?” That was Gail again.

I never got to buy the shoe rack or the transparent boxes. I hurried home because I wanted to lie down and get my things in order before my first day at work the following Monday. I stopped by the restaurant for a free meal. I ate my meatballs and penne dish at the counter top in Sam’s kitchen while I waited for him to finish cleaning up.

We walked from the restaurant back to the condo. When we got inside, I found a red-and-black metal shoe rack with a big ribbon attached to it.

“A homecoming present,” Sam said. “I told Nino to buy it this afternoon.”

“So that’s why you told me to buy the wallpaper first,” I replied with a smile.

“Well, yeah,” Sam answered. “Besides, I figured you wouldn’t buy one today kasi walang magbubuhat.”

“You so know me,” I said. “Thanks, Sam!”

“Welcome home, Veronica.”

  2. yeah, sam is so sweet! it's nice to live in a condo/apartment with a guys friends..i've done that before pero 5 kami sa bahay..3 girls and 2 guys..pero yun nga..always wear a bra and never short shorts! hehe
