What's Wrong With You, Sam?

I woke up in a strange room--a small girl’s room. The walls were pale pink; the curtains were thin and white; the bed sheet had pink roses and yellow daisies; and the blanket had the same colors.
Someone was stroking my hair.
“Matt?” I called out.
“No,” the voice said. “It’s just me.”
When I turned to look, Sam was sitting beside the bed.
I immediately tugged the blanket to my neck for fear I might be naked. When I checked, my black bikini was gone and I was bundled in a thick white robe.
“Were you disappointed?” he asked, his voice soft, “That it wasn’t Matt in my place?”
What? Am I still alive?
“What are you talking about?” I asked.
He leaned back on his chair and closed his eyes. He looked very tired.
“I thought you were going to die,” he said.
It took a while for my brain to reload the event this afternoon. I sat up on the bed and faced him.
“Were you the one who pulled me out of the water?”
“What were you thinking, Veronica?” he continued as if he didn’t hear me. “You could have died.”
“Sam, was it you?” I asked again.
“Is that even relevant?!” He stood up suddenly. “Why are you so obsessed about knowing who saved you?”
I was shocked. What was happening? Why was Sam so angry?
“I’m not!” I yelled back. “I was just asking! If you don’t want to answer my question, then don’t! Damn it!”
Silence.
The door opened, and Carl and Nino entered. The two stopped dead on their tracks when they saw our faces.
“You know, it doesn’t matter,” Sam said as he walked toward the door, carrying the mug of coffee that was sitting on the bedside table. “I’m glad you’re safe now.”
And with those words, he left me there on the bed, with Carl and Nino too stunned to ask what the hell just happened.

17. I think Sam is worried and jealous that V is giving too much credit on knowing who saved her. I think Sam feels that V would want to know that Matt saved her. Super Ouch for Sam.
