Who Needs A Boyfriend To Be In Love, Anyway?

Two years and a million funny anecdotes later, I got the chance to talk to Charlie, a dear college friend, via YM. Under normal circumstances, it would have been amusing that she’s going through the same shitty situation as mine.
Oh yes, Charlie is a girl, who refuses to use her given name “Charlene” because it’s too feminine. Since we both have the same penchant for colorful language, expensive coffee, and cheesy talk, we got right along since junior year of college.
Charlie is in love—at least that was what she told me at first—with an old flame back in high school. So I pressed, “You mean you already have a boyfriend?!” Emphasis on the exclamation point here, because as far as I can remember, Charlie is a member of the No-Boyfriend-Since-Birth Society.
“Who said you need to have a boyfriend to be in love?” she said with a grimace.
Bull’s eye!
She started telling me about her current, umm, affair/date thing. She sounded so happy at first, but after a few days of non-stop cheesy talk, she told me that Jan (the HS flame) started giving her the cold shoulder after the first hint of impatience (read: subtle hints of "So, what are we anyway?").
When Charlie began to sound depressed, I decided to share with her a few snippets of my experiences of late, hoping it might cheer her up. God knows my situation is far more confusing than hers. Truth is, I’m the biggest chicken left hanging in midair here.
Hearing what I’m going through seemed to inspire her—especially since this made her realize she’s not the only one suffering from this sense of “not knowing." I think I’ve just Cosmo-tized a friend. *Clap clap*
And exchanging way too personal stuff with Charlie--that simple act of opening up to a dear friend--led to a great realization.

rhia8. I think what V meant was nobody needs someone to be "in love" perse. I also agree with Vhye when she said "to love" is a two-way street. But the two concepts are on the different planes.
