The reason is simple: I have lots and lots of guy friends!

Here are the reasons having lots of guy friends beats being in a relationship:

  1. They let you drive their car (Sam, Franco, Aldrich, and Kit). But that’s probably a protocol, and at the back of their minds, they’re praying to every saint in the whole Christendom for you to change your mind and say no.
  2. They buy you ice cream when you cry. (Sam, Nino)
  3. They are the force behind the movement to get you home safely when you’re drunk and rendered unintelligible at some bar in Makati. (Sam)
  4. They listen as you cry over the phone, valiantly explaining how you accidentally scratched the back of a Nissan Santa Fe at the parking lot. They calm you down and say “Okay lang yun,” “Tama ‘yon nakipag-usap ka,” and “Mag-shopping ka na and try to forget it muna.” (Sam, Aldrich)
  5. You can always run to them when shit happens, like when a date turns sour, and steal food from their fridges. (Sam)
  6. You can talk to them about cars, guns, video games, suspense thriller movies, and ice hockey. (Sam, Nino, Kit, Carl, Franco, Denver)
  7. You always get the front row seat to what goes on inside the mind of a typical male, and marvel at the way a cool, easy-go-lucky party animal is reduced to a prepubescent boy when he talks lovingly about the girl he fancies. It’s an eye-opening experience, surprising and amusing to the core. My own personal guy spies! (Sam, Franco, Nino, Carl, and sometimes, Kit, Denver)
  8. They give you advice that would put Oprah to shame. (Sam, Aldrich, Franco, Denver)
  9. You get free hugs even when you really don’t need it. (Sam)
  10. You can admit to loving someone who belongs to the same circle without them giving you an “oh my God face.” (Aldrich)
  11. You can talk to them till four in the morning without them worrying about their beauty sleep. (All)
  12. They text you when there’s a bombing, coup d'etat, or rally in Makati. (Sam, Aldrich, Nino)
  13. They offer to fetch you from your house. (Sam)
  14. They don’t mind walking with you around the outskirts of Makati. (Sam)
  15. Even if they threaten to leave you for dead along Dela Rosa Street once you start crying, they won’t say anything and simply walk with you side by side when the first teardrop falls. (Sam)
  16. Then ask over and over if you’re okay because they refuse to leave you crying, worried that you still have to drive home. You swallow your throat and croak you’re fine. They leave. You get in the car, lock the door, and cry again. Buti tinted kotse mo. It starts raining when you finally decide to leave. (Sam)
  17. You get elated when they approve of your work. (Sam)
  18. They give you cool mp3s, DVDs, PS games. (Sam, Kit, Franco)
  19. Sugarcoating is not in their vocabulary. (All)
  20. They make you laugh. (All)
  21. They listen when you sing. Oh yes, I sing. (All)
  22. They watch your back. (Sam)
  23. You can bitch all you want and still be friends with them the next day. (Sam)
  24. They keep the brain in mint condition through intellectual conversation. (Sam, Denver)
  25. They help you realize your dream. (Er, Matt?)
  26. They give you a DVD copy of your favorite movie. (Er, Matt?)
  27. They’re always around. (All)
  28. They give in to your kakulitan and buy you a slice of chocolate cake at Starbucks. (Franco)
  29. They attend your despedida party. They don’t leave you. (All)
  30. They don’t try to change you. (All)
  31. They tell you you’re beautiful. (Secret)
  32. They tease you as though you’re actually a guy. They orchestrate a verbal fist fight because they say it’s fun to bully you. But they’re actually nice. (Nino)
  33. They offer wise words when all you want is to stab someone with a plastic spoon. (Er, Matt?)
  34. You always get the last French fry. (Sam)
  35. They inspire you. (All)
  36. They’re your knights in pressed polos when Prince Charming is lost somewhere because he’s too stubborn to ask for directions. (All)

And last (#37), it feels great not to think about whether you should say this or that, or do this or that. It’s liberating not to act but to simply be yourself because you know that they accept you for who you are and you’ll always be friends. (This one goes to Sam.)

So you see, with guy friends like these, who would mind being single in a world where people expect you to be attached? In the weeks that followed, whenever people ask me if I have a boyfriend and I say no, I actually enjoy the next 15 minutes explaining why.

And then Ana came and ruined it all.
