There were so many times Nino caught me sneaking into the restaurant kitchen, stealing French Fries and ice cream, when I was supposed to be out on a date. One night, it was the boss who caught me.

“Aren’t you supposed to be out with date #25?” Sam asked as he walked into the large kitchen.

“He’s boring,” I simply said. I was wearing a dress and carrying all the paraphernalia of a girl on a mission. I sat on the counter and ate fries and ice cream with chocolate syrup.

“Has anyone ever told you that you are a walking contradiction with ice cream on your hands?” he asked as he sat next to me and looked at my plate. “That’s gross. Ice cream and French Fries and chocolate syrup and--sh*t, you stole the truffles?!”

“Shut up, I’m eating.”

We finished the gross concoction. At nagustuhan ng loko. He poured us some wine.

“Do you know what your problem is, Veronica?” Sam started. “You fall way faster than most people I know. And you fall way too fast just because you feel smitten. Tapos kapag may nakita kang hindi mo gusto, ayaw mo na kaagad.

“Why don’t you try changing your routine?” he continued. “’Wag ka munang mag-fall. Get to know the guy first, as in get to know him, before you decide. You’ll save lots of hearts from getting broken that way—including yours.”

“So Charlie told you,” I just said.

“Yes, because we’re both worried about how you’re handling the after-Matt episode.”

I looked stoned.

“You carry your emotions like a flashing neon sign on your forehead,” Sam continued. “I know you’re still in love with Matt. He’s an asshole, can’t you see that? Of course, best foot forward siya dati. He wanted something from you, for God’s sake. And now that he got it already, he dropped you.

“I know you’re doing your best to forget him, V,” he said with a sigh. “I know that’s part of the reason you moved out. And the main reason you agreed to this ridiculous dating spree."

“How can I forget him, Sam?” I faced him, teary-eyed now. “I just want to get over this now. How about you? How did you forget about your ex?”

“You just forget,” he said. “Keep forgetting until the time you realize that you are no longer forcing yourself to forget."

“So I just forget,” I said.

“Yes, because eventually you will get pass this,” he assured me. “You will find someone new, and when that happens, take it slow. Don’t love too much, it’s dangerous. I’m sure you remember what happened the last time you let your heart take over your head. Look what that got you into.”

We sipped the wine in silence.

“Sam, have I ever told you why I took Journalism?” I asked.

“Because you like to write?”

“No, because I’ve always been bad with numbers,” I answered. “I hate Mathematics and I never understood fractions, algebra, trigonometry, and all that dizzying stuff.”

“Okay, so what’s that got to do with this?”

I sighed.

“When I fall in love, it’s either I give my whole heart or I don’t give it at all,” I answered. “Because I can’t love in fractions.”
