You probably have a pretty good grasp of your passion preferences. And after all the helpful sex hints we've been giving you, we're sure you know your way around the boudoir! But a woman’s sexuality is complicated—so tricky in fact that PhDs and other smarty-pants have devoted their careers to studying the titillating topic. To satisfy our never-ending curiosity about what’s new on the sex-ed front, we decided to dig through their racy research and found eight fascinating facts that left our jaw dropping in "Oh!"
  1. When you orgasm, your brain temporarily shuts down. During climax, the parts of women’s brains that deal with alertness and emotions, including fear and anxiety, go inactive, according to Gert Holstege, MD, PhD, neuroscientist at the University of Groningen in the Netherlands. Just think, if you’re able to shut your brain off before you even reach the peaks of pleasure, you’ll be that much more apt to orgasm.

  2. Women’s number one fantasy is to surrender sexually to their man. “A number of studies have shown that the most common fantasy for females is to give in to their partner and have him take charge sexually because it alleviates the constant pressure they feel to please their partner,” says psychologist Michael Bader, author of Arousal: The Secret Logic of Sexual Fantasies.

  3. When it comes to your pleasure, his package width matters most. The bigger the girth, the better able you are to feel him against the sensitive walls of your vagina. Plus the area where all the nerve endings are is only a few inches long, so anything more than that won’t make much difference.

  4. Women who’ve gone to college are more apt to give and receive oral sex. The same goes for men, so seek out an educated dude.

  5. You can have an orgasm in your sleep...although you might not even be aware of it. Because there’s usually no, um, evidence, women often don’t realize that they’ve had a wet dream. Still, plenty of chicks have them.

  6. Women are more likely to think naughty thoughts about a man they know than a stranger (regardless of how hot he may be). While men may see a sexy girl on the street and immediately get aroused, a study presented to the International Society for the Study of Women’s Sexual Health suggested that women need an emotional context for erotic inspiration.

  7. Your body can be ready for action while your mind isn’t. Research indicates that women can show physical signs of sexual excitement below the belt but have zero clue that they’re aroused. In other words, it takes more than just a simple stroke to get turned on—you need to be mentally prepped as well.

  8. One more reason to exercise: A workout can boost your arousal. A study from the University of Texas at Austin found that women who did 20 minutes of cardio before watching an erotic film became more aroused than those who hadn’t worked out at all.
