Any marriage proposal, whether intimate or elaborate, will always be kilig-inducing, but there’s just something about those that involve a flash mob—a group of people who come together for an unexpected performance—that makes us think of the lucky ladies on the receiving end of the ring, “Swerte naman niya!”

We got three girls to share how their proposals involving a marching band, dance numbers, and musical performances went down, and all the feels that rushed out as a result. BRB CRYING.

Jella and Ross

Jella: Ross had suggested we form a group of friends to go with on a Binondo Food Tour. He said that footage from this upcoming food tour would make it to a tourism video promoting the City of Manila, so doing it with our friends would make the tour even more fun.

When the day of the tour came, it was shaping up to be a bad day for me. Set back by delays at my board review school and horrendous traffic, I called Ross to tell him that I might not make it, but he said I should try to make it still.

When I finally caught up with the group, our friends were there with Anson, our tour guide, and videographers and a photographer who were hired to take footage for the tourism video—which was actually the proposal video, only I didn’t know it then.

As we stepped out of the final stop on our food tour, the City of Manila Marching Band, whom Anson had claimed was there for the tourism video, began to perform. As policemen escorted our group to Plaza Lorenzo Ruiz for a final group picture, Ross said he was leaving for a bit to change his shirt, so I walked ahead to the plaza with our friends.

At the plaza, I was surprised to see a huge gathering of people and pink and white balloons and bouquets of red roses scattered all over the ground. Turns out my family and friends who weren’t even part of the tour were there. They formed a circle, and a friend pushed me to the center of it. As they handed me bouquets one by one, I started crying as I realized what was happening.

When Ross finally appeared, the marching band launched into Coldplay’s “The Scientist” and the people set off sparklers. Ross approached me, said he wanted to spend forever with me, got down on one knee, and asked me to marry him. As I said “yes,” fireworks exploded above us.

The proposal was absolutely perfect. But if I had known I was going to be proposed to that day, I would’ve at least worn heels!

Amit and Farishta

Farishta: It was supposed to be like any other Saturday. I was at the mall hanging out with some friends when I received a message from another friend saying we were going to have dinner at TGI Fridays at High Street. I confirmed that I was going, as we usually meet every weekend. Little did I know that it was not just any other weekend—it was the weekend that would change my life.

It was around 8 p.m. that night when Amit picked me up from my house for dinner with our usual group of friends. When we got there, most of our friends were already there. I was a little shocked because some of my friends who were supposedly out of town were present, but I didn’t think much of it.

While we were having dinner, a bunch of people who were around the area suddenly gathered and started dancing to the song “Party Rock Anthem” by LMFAO. My friends and I were all amused and wondered what was going on so we started messing around saying we would join the dancers.

When the song switched to “Marry You” by Bruno Mars, suddenly the guys in our group—including Amit—got up to join them!

Amit then led me in front of the gathered dancers. The guys took off his button-down shirt and underneath was a T-shirt that said "JUST SAY I DO." He then knelt with the ring in front of me. I was so stunned that I didn't say anything. My friends at the back were screaming, “Say yes!” so I screamed, “YES!!!”

Turns out, they had rehearsed for one whole month for this surprise. It amazed me that so much effort was put into making the whole proposal perfect, and I was the only one surprised by everything. It was a dream proposal. I felt so special and on top of the world.

Gino and Vida

Vida: Before Gino proposed, I already knew I would say “yes” the moment he popped the question. We had been together for four years and it was only a matter of time.

One afternoon, we went for a snack at 2nds in BGC. As we sat down and ordered food, he excused himself to go to the men’s room. Nothing out of the ordinary, or so I thought.

Suddenly, a guy started singing—one of the customers it seemed. I was amused at first, thinking, “Wow, this guy has a lot of guts to be singing in a public place.” But when he took the waitress’ hand, I concluded that he was serenading her. I saw the girl across my table taking a video, so I followed suit.

Then the waitress sang one of my favorite songs. Towards the end of the song, it dawned on me. I thought, “Is this it?!?”

Table after table, guests around me stood up in song and dance to classics I have in my playlist. I sat in awe and amazement, enjoying the rare moment of watching what felt like a musical of my favorite songs with a front row seat.

When Gino’s parents came out singing and dancing themselves, I was flabbergasted and moved to tears. Tears turned to laughter and sheer delight as his sisters appeared in pink doing a choreographed number. Tears fell again when my mom and my best friend came out, singing in between sobs for they knew I had found “The One.”

Months before, Gino had already asked for our parents’ blessing to get married. While he’s not at all the type to wear his heart on his sleeve, he knew I loved surprises, musicals, and the classics. So he put all these elements together in a proposal that would surely make me swoon. Though it was far removed from his own preference of “private” and “quiet,” it was special because I knew he did it purely out of love.

Today, the memory of my husband’s proposal still makes me tear up in overwhelming gratitude. “My thoughts are nothing like your thoughts, says the Lord. And my ways are far beyond anything you could imagine.” On that day, this Bible verse became real to me, because I had experienced no less than God’s incredible, unimaginable, and underserved love through Gino, as well as our loved ones who were there to witness it.
