Make Your Hair Color Last With These Tips And Products

Great hair color is one of the best weapons against aging or looking old, without having to go under the knife.
Just like the use of makeup, changing your hair color can help transform your look to breathtaking proportions. (This, of course, can go both ways, as sporting a new hair color can make or break your appearance.) However, as hair grows everyday and as we wash it frequently, maintenance can be quite costly--imagine having to go to the salon monthly for retouching!
Not to worry, Cosmo girls! We sat down with one of Manila’s well-renowned hair color experts Danny Katalbas of Emphasis Salon in Rockwell, who also happens to be L’Oreal Professionnel’s Institutional Artist Trainer. He caters to celebrity clients like Lea Salonga and socialite Tessa Prieto-Valdes, to name a few! Lucky for us, he shared with us his top salon-worthy tips for extending the life of hair color. Here they are:
1. Avoid pool or salt water.
Chlorine and salt can strip off hair color almost instantly. Danny says that even just staying by the beach already has damaging effects on one’s hair color. So, as you would with sunscreen for your skin, use sun protective sprays to aid in warding off environmental factors that damage your color-treated hair.
2. Avoid frequent washing.
Wash your hair only once a day--at the most (unless you have a serious reason to do so more than once, like after going to the gym and such). If you plan to have a salon blow dry, wash your hair prior to your visit or have it washed at the salon, but not on both instances.
3. Avoid washing hair with hot water.
Hot water weakens the hair’s ability to retain color and washes color off easily. Instead, wash hair with lukewarm water. Then, to lock in shine, do a final rinse with cold water to close your scalp’s pores.
4. Use the right hair color care products.
The right hair care products can do wonders for prolonging hair's color and luster. Don't just choose products that are labeled with "color care." Choose products like shampoos, conditioners, hair masques, and more that offer a full spectrum of benefits for ultimate hair protection. Not only should your color care needs be met, they should also suit the needs of your hair type and condition (i.e. volumizing, hair repair, hydrating, etc).

Coloring one’s hair requires investing a lot of time and money. So, before you decide to take the color plunge, consider your lifestyle and budget first.
Also, to avoid the nasty look of growing roots, opt for a color that is not too far from your natural hair color. This goes especially for those who hardly have time to retouch every six to eight weeks, or those who don’t have the budget to get their hair colored as frequently as they would like.
Still, with the help of these tips, you can definitely achieve and maintain salon-like results while in between visits!
