Gretchen Barretto says being fasyon should never be expensive. Although she’s famous for her expensive dresses and accessories, the local fashion icon insists, “Hindi kailangang lahat branded.”
In an interview with the Magkaribal actress, Cosmo.ph spotted her wearing a plain T-shirt over black leggings. She even boasted, “Hindi naman talaga mahal itong T-shirt na ito. I think this is less than P1,000 and itong leggings [din]. I mean, it’s really how you carry your outfit. It’s not about how much your outfit [costs].”
Gretchen recalls that, when she was younger, she couldn’t afford expensive outfits. However, this didn’t stop her from dressing up and feeling good about her clothes.
She says, “Of course, it’s a bonus kung kaya mong bumili ng branded. Talagang [if] you have the passion for fashion, and you can afford a more expensive or branded [items] to keep naman talaga, you can keep it na for life and pass it on. Parang inheritance na siya. [Passing] it on naman na talaga ang future noon, to your children and the children of your children. I mean, it’s also good to have [signature items] if you can afford. But if you can’t, ang daming nabibili kahit saan.”
For those who can’t afford pricey clothes, Gretchen suggest ways to turn them into fab outfits. La Greta cites her outfit as an example.
“Flexible ang outfit na ito—pwedeng naka-tsinelas lang, kumportable sa set kapag walang press. Siyempre, kapag may press, nandiyan na ang red shoes, lumalabas na ang accessories. Pero kapag wala kayo, wala na ’yan, flip-flops na ‘yan.”
She also mentions that visiting thrift shops or tiangges would help fashionistas keep up with the latest trends in local fashion.
Gretchen relates, “I have branded pieces; I won’t deny [that]. But I have pieces that could also look nice na hindi naman talaga mahal. Lalo na kapag, let’s say, trendy and ito lang ang uso now and I know it’s not something na gusto kong itago sa closet ko for the rest of my life, pwede namang hindi branded.”
Another example? Her signature scent, Greta, P348, the latest celebrity scent from Herbench. A concoction of gentle, sophisticated sensuality, it is, indeed, a reflection of Gretchen's feminine, classy, and mysterious persona. And, it comes at such an affordable price. Gretchen would be the first to tell you that your signature scent need not cost a fortune!
At the eau de toilette's product launch held at TriNoma Activity Center, Cosmo.ph once again caught up with her for a short chat. This time, Gretchen talked about her latest scent, her wishes for the new year, and her upcoming endeavors, both in showbiz and outside of it. Launch the gallery after reading the interview to see Gretchen in her various outfits, from casual taping garb to glam event gowns. See behind the scenes photos of her Greta shoot and the scent's grand launch.
What was the inspiration behind Greta EDT?
Well, we wanted a fresh, romantic scent that will linger, even hours after.
Were you involved in coming up with the scent?
Yes, I [was]. I chose the scent. We put all the scents together, [as well as] the packaging and everything else that goes with it.
Who would you give it to?
I have found forgiveness in my heart for all those na nasaktan ko. It has been a great year. I know that marami rin akong nagawa in the past na hindi kanais-nais and kung sino man 'yung mga nasaktan ko din, humihingi rin ako ng tawad.
What are your plans and wishes for the new year?
I just wish good health for everybody, and peace. This is with Angelica Panganiban, and meron pang mga ibang kasali na surprise. Hindi ko na muna papangunahan ang Channel 2. Tony's getting into a lot of businesses, and I, too, am getting into a lot of businesses. Masusurpresa na lang kayo.
Could you clue us in on your upcoming business endeavor?
[It's] about beauty. I'm gonna surprise everybody next year.
Can we expect a movie anytime soon?
'Yung movie na 'yan, hindi ko pa alam kung kaya ng schedule ko because in February I start shooting my new teleserye under ABS-CBN. And, marami akong businesses na bubuksan so I don't know if I'll have time.
Who would you want to be paired with?
How does it feel to know that you're also a fashion icon?
And until the day I die, I will be here.
