Meet The One-Legged Model Who Walked At New York Fashion Week

She had to be amputated after using a tampon.

In 2012, Lauren Wasser lost her right leg after she contracted Toxic Shock Syndrome.

TSS is a condition that puts menstruating women who use tampons, particularly those that are extra absorbent, in danger. It happens when there is an excessive amount of bacteria called Staphylococcus aureus (or staph) in the body, resulting in the release of poisonous substances. This causes a sudden drop in blood pressure and a lack of oxygen in the organs, which may lead to death.

Guys can get it, too, btdubs. They can get it from cuts, bites, burns or scalds, as the same bacteria can infect the skin through an open wound.

Now, Lauren is resisting conventional perceptions of beauty by cementing her status as the It girl to watch. The 28-year-old model just made her debut at New York Fashion Week walking for Chromat, a brand that describes itself as creating “structural experiments for the human body.”

Lauren took her turn down the runway in the label’s Dione dress, a midnight blue and black dress with wires attached to the skirt to form a cage.

Her unabashed way of embracing her condition is truly inspiring, and we’re excited to see where this milestone takes her. Bookings at Paris Fashion Week, perhaps? Or an editorial for a major glossy? Either way, we're rooting for you, Lauren!
