Skincare Resolutions
Posted on January 23, 2010 12:00PM

One of the perks of being part of the Cosmo team is how I can get first-hand advice on beauty and skin care solutions. Whenever I need to ask about a particular product or have a burning skincare question, I can just scoot over to beauty editor Nicole’s or ed-in-chief Zo’s desks, or simply blurt my question out loud and a Cosmo staff member is sure to come over and rid me of my skincare woes. That, or many of our beauty and makeup artist friends would usually have a thing or two to say about it.
I’ve never been the beauty expert. And it’s not that I have problematic skin; far from it. I’ve been blessed with acne-free face (except for the occasional, it’s-that-time-of-the-month zit). But as a bride-to-be, I’ve been “forced” to think about my skin more than I used to. -
Tipping The Scales

This must be the nth entry you've read about weight on this site, but I feel that I should write one too, since I used to be fat. And I don't mean that in an I'm-actually-a-size-six-but-everyday-feels-like-a-fat-day kind of way. At one point in my life, I was two pounds shy of the two hundred-pound mark. At 5'5", my torso looked a lot like a tree trunk.
Being obese pretty much caught me unawares. The summer before I started high school, our entire family went to the States for a month, then my dad and I toured Europe for another month. I remember weighing myself before I left the Philippines, and I weighed 140 lbs. I was about 13 at that time, so you can say that I've always been pretty heavy.
That vacation felt like one big binge as I made sure to try all the different kinds of food from the different European countries. I weighed 180 lbs. by the time I got back to the Philippines. You'd think I'd be shocked, but I took it all in stride. I remember thinking that there are a lot of people who are bigger than I am, so I can still afford to indulge. Besides, I was in an all-girls school, so I never really felt the need to be conscious about my weight.

Hair Stories

My hair booboos and I, we go a long way back.
When I was six, I dared to give myself bangs. I fished a pair of scissors (yes, the mapurol ones) out of my bag and snipped away. I got my bangs, all right, but they were uneven and super short they hung midway across my forehead. My mom tried to save my hair, but there was little she could do. I looked like a schoolgirl sporting a really bad and awkward wig.
When Ghost came out, my mom, a big fan of the movie, found the perfect reason to change my looks. She gave me a Demi Moore boycut which I absolutely loathed. I cried my 7-year-old heart out, seeing my beautiful hair on the floor. -
A Reason For Every Setback

If there's one quote I've learned to appreciate and live by, it's this:
"There's a reason for every setback."
I cannot begin to enumerate the number of times I've had "Aha!" moments just by realizing this.

Daring Hair Moves

Every month, we get letters from readers who want to join the Cosmo Glamovers. Here, they ask me for help on what 'do will suit them and tell me all about their hair dilemmas. I always tell them that they need to cut it short or find a style that they can easily maintain. Bottom line: If your locks are always in a ponytail, chop ’em off.
This is me with my tried-and-tested short hair. In the photo with me is Cosmo Fashion Editor Kat Dy and Editor-in-Chief Zo Aguila.
