“What are you doing here?” was Cary’s first line.
“I wanted to talk to you,” I answered, trying hard to keep my composure and dignity intact.
“About what?” he asked while fixing his files.

I just knew I could tell Sam anything because I trusted him. He was also very practical. He saw things from a different perspective. And what I loved most about him was that he never once told me what to do. Instead, he shaped his own questions to help me arrive at my own decisions. Soon, I found myself sharing with him my dilemma then about my then drag racer boyfriend, Cary.

Flashback: "I'll Always Have Your Back"

Days became weeks; weeks became months; and months became a year. Our old office in the outskirts of Makati transferred to a more prestigious address parallel to Ayala Avenue. New faces came and went but Sam and I stayed in the company despite the stress and meager pay.
And just like back in college, there were people in the corporate arena who were nice in front of you but talked behind your back as if your boots, clothes, and your straight English were the only interesting things on the face of the planet.

Flashback: Bloody Hell!

The bloody day came a week later. I was sleeping inside the Makati-bound FX taxi and woke up to a vibrating mobile phone. The screen displayed Sam’s name.
“Hello?”
“V! She got it na!” Sam told me excitedly.
“Got what na?” I asked groggily.
