Hooking Up With My Friend's Ex

"When I was at an org party, I saw my friend's ex across the table. He winked at me and I found this really cute. So I went closer and kissed him. ..."

    Still, it consumed me.

    The bridge just kept burning.

I couldn't get it to fall down and burn to ashes for the first and last time.

I know that it's immature. I know that it had been 12 years. Nicia was shocked to hear all the things I said because it never occurred to her that I had been keeping all that anger inside for years. She told me to grow up, that we're not in high school anymore. I wanted to tell her to heed her own advice, grow up, and treat people the way they should be treated--starting with her ex-boyfriend, whom she treated like a dog for five years.

Wait, lightning just struck me. I had almost forgotten that I had treated Logan badly...maybe not in the same way, but you know the saying: "Linisin mo muna ang sarili mong bakuran..."

Nicia just went through a terrible breakup, and like every other time, I supported her, defended her, nursed her back to sanity, and told her the cruel truth she wouldn't hear from anyone else in her circles: "You're with a habitual cheater! So why, why, why are you even surprised that he cheated on you?!"

Why? Because no one else in her crowd would ever have the guts to do what I always do and say what I can.

  • Nicia Was The First "Best Friend" I Lost...Before Sam

In her book Astigirl, my friend Tweet Sering wrote about why, a few years back, she went back to her parents' house and lived like a teenager for a while.

She described what her teenage years were like. In a nutshell, it was your average teenage angst plus the constant and tiring battle for individuality, going against what people wanted her to be. The teenager in her couldn't wait to grow up and live life on her own terms without having to answer to anyone but herself. And because she couldn't wait to grow up, she shunned common, nubile things like high school boyfriends and other teen rituals. She became a late bloomer, and it was only in her early 30s that she felt the need to make peace with her teenage self because, as she put it, "The girl was cramping my style." So for almost a year, she lived like a teenager in her parents' house and did all the things her teenage self was unable to do. Tweet mused that she was too hard on that teenage girl, so now, she let her be.

I couldn't have read Tweet's story at a more appropriate time because recently, my 25-year-old self did something my 13-year-old self wasn't able to do.

I am, once again, a woman scorned. As I have written before, angst is one of the best motivations for writing. For days, I pondered, What is a "best friend"?

Ever since Nicia dumped Jed in freshman year, he had been asking her the same question year after year: "Pwede ba akong manligaw?" During the first few months of the new school year, Jed would offer his heart on a silver platter and Nicia would go (Twisted) Cooking Mama on him and grab, gut, and chop his teenage heart. Year after year, my guy friend's heart would go "bopis" right before our eyes. I really never cared about it before, but until Jed and I became friends, I never realized just how much it would affect me.

Even though it wasn't mine, the summer before senior year of high school reeked of bad romance, and this lingered long after classes resumed. Come to think of it, I never had a vacation before senior year. My parents enrolled me in one of those review schools for college entrance exams, so instead of going to beach resorts and getting a tan, I ended up going to review classes and trying to stay awake for as long as I can. I dreaded that summer, but the torture paid off when I passed my CATs. But, what made that summer really unforgettable was finding out how Jed really felt about me.
