Matt And Stacy
Posted on November 6, 2011 12:00AM

"I went to the U.S. as a last resort," Stacy said after I finished telling her what I knew.
"Matt--he's...oh, I don't know. There was something...almost frightening about him during those years. In college, he was so possessive. Yes, he had me erase my Friendster and Myspace accounts. He even asked for my password in Hotmail and kept track of my emails. Yes, he wanted me to 'disappear' from the internet and, because I was young and so much in love, I did what he asked. I even stopped talking to some of my friends that he didn't know."
She paused before saying, "I was just a young writer then and he was already the editor-in-chief of our school paper."
It almost felt like she could see the past shifting into focus right there at the park's open space, where kids ran around with their yayas hot on their heels. -
Wiser The Second Time Around
Posted on June 25, 2011 12:00AM

If you've never watched a play, here's a good tidbit to know beforehand: dress/suit up. You can always tell if a random couple is going to the theater by the way they dress up: always in dark-colored dressy garments and leather shoes--always dressed-to-impress. When you're 25 and sitting amongst fashion-conscious kids four years your junior, you can't help but feel like a "situational senior." It's a term I coined after what Barney called the "Situational Hotness" in How I Met Your Mother.
Since I had already seen Avenue Q years ago, I truly felt like I was wiser the second time I watched--not because I already knew the lines and the plot, but mostly because I knew what I wanted. -
Under The Stars Part 1
Posted on August 8, 2010 12:00AM

As if getting lost and stuck weren't enough to shake my composure, I began to think that I might be Lady Fate's flavor of the month. A week later, I got cornered.
"A black-tie party?" I asked.
"Yeah," Lily answered. "It's a fundraiser for our college org. Come ha, it will be fun. Bring a date. Bring Logan."
"Gee, Lily, I don't know."

In Pursuit Of Higher Education
Posted on January 3, 2010 12:00PM
SAN FRANCISCO - The city of Berkeley in California was one of my favorite hangouts during the time I spent gallivanting about in the States in 2007. I'd take a train to go for visits once a week, during which I'd duck into music shops like Rasputin and Amoeba, dig up secondhand and first-edition copies of hard-to-find books in hole-in-the-wall stores such as Moe's and Cody's (which has already ceased operations, as I discovered today), check out tie-dyed shirts and other weird merchandise of hippie street vendors along Telegraph Avenue, and try out the weirdest headpieces at Berkeley Hat.

A walk along the colorful Telegraph Avenue leads you to quirky finds.

The time I spent in college was pretty much divided into two: academics and work for the school paper. The very little free time this left me was spent going out with friends and having as much fun as a college student should. And if you ask me if I regret spending much of my student life working and studying instead of partying, going places, making lots of new friends (and boyfriends, haha!), and other things college folk are known to get into, I’d say I’d consider the thought, but not really.
The need to study hard is a given—I had to maintain my scholarship, or else I wouldn’t be able to afford the tuition the university I chose. But working for the school paper? That was all for passion. I really wanted to write, and to me, there simply was no other organization I wanted to be part of then (although it took me a year to muster the courage to apply for a post in the News team).
Several batches of News Editors and Staffers (I'm the second one from right--and the oldest News ed here, yikes!)
I got to thinking about these things because our school paper recently held a reunion to celebrate its 80th anniversary, and I didn’t dare miss it for the world. A lot of my best moments, both during and even after college, had a lot to do with the school paper: the best friends I made there, the most wonderful people I ever had the opportunity to work with, the training I got from having to produce a monthly paper on top of fulfilling requirements for my classes, and all the memorable anecdotes of what happened in between. It was the highlight of my college life, and ask anyone who was part of that organization, and you’re probably going to get the same response (yes, probably even Luli Arroyo, whom we spotted at the event). - What Keeps Me Going
