Moving Out--Again
Posted on February 11, 2012 12:00AM

I felt like I was 23 again.
I remember that morning many, many years ago when I told my parents I was moving into Sam's condo unit in Katipunan: My mother organized a prayer meeting-slash-exorcism for her liberated daughter, while my father did a thorough background check on my then "condo-mate."
Nobody went hysterical, but the deafening silence of my parents' non-reaction was more than I could take. While they sort of thought Sam was gay (bless his soul), sharing a condo unit with a male friend is a no-no--well, at least to their generation. -
Everyone's Getting Married--And I'm Getting A Condo
Posted on February 10, 2012 07:00AM

In the two months since I started my new job at The Fort, most of my time and energy was focused on getting my small editorial team in tip-top shape--and making it to the office before 11 o'clock in the morning. The past two months have also been spent looking for a condominium unit near my office so I won't have to spend a total of over P400 daily on cab fare from QC to Bonifacio Global City.
I also had to quit the gym, so I instead resolved to walk as much as I can on weekdays. But, it's never enough. I usually stay at the office 'til 10PM, working on the magazine proofs, and when I finally leave the office, I'm too exhausted to walk. I really need a condo unit. -
Home With Sam
Posted on February 6, 2010 12:00AM

With everything I brought with me, it would take me two days to get settled. My lips were probably turning blue from hunger because Sam decided we take a break. We went to the small L-shaped kitchenette that, amazingly, had a spacious countertop and three bar stools. I unpacked my Mom’s coffeemaker, stole Sam’s coffee, poured water, and settled comfortably on one of the stools as I waited for my coffee to brew and for Sam to finish cooking my favorite cheese omelet—gourmet style.

Moving In
Posted on February 5, 2010 12:00AM

“Hey forehead, I’m here.”
“Good morning to you too, Nose-y,” he said. “I’ll be right there.”
I smiled as I slipped my phone in the right-side pocket of my jeans. I was standing in the small lobby of Sam’s building bright and early on Monday morning. So maybe I looked like Elle Woods when she first moved into her freshman dorm in Harvard. No, I didn’t bring my Shih Tzu, and no, I wasn’t wearing pink, dear Lord. But behind me were three big suitcases, one balikbayan box, and the neatly packed skeletal base of my queen-size bed, plus the foam.

On Independence And Co-Habitation
Posted on November 12, 2009 07:30PM

"A grownup is a child with layers on," said Woody Harrelson, star of the long-running sitcom Cheers, but perhaps more popularly known for films such as The People Vs. Larry Flynt, Indecent Proposal, and more recently, Management with Jennifer Aniston. I completely agree with him. There are days when I still can't believe how drastically my life has changed and how adult my problems seem to be, now that I'm independent. I try to be as grownup about them as I can be, but I still can't help but be scared or want to cry or stop being responsible for myself sometimes. There are things you do because you have to, and growing up is one of them. Fortunately, that doesn't mean the fun has to end there.
One of the more exciting things about asserting your independence is having a place to call your own. So, about a month ago, I found a nice 3-bedroom condo and three equally nice people to live with: my sister, a friend from high school, and hot, candle-making hunk, Angelo. It is quite an unusual set-up to have three girls and one guy share 44sqm of space, but it's been working out surprisingly well. We genuinely enjoy each other's company, which is why we sometimes make an effort to go home for dinner and even spend part of the weekend together. In a way, we are really just a bunch of big kids with adult responsibilities. Since all kids need to be taught a lesson, here's some of what I learned:
