Hooking Up With My Friend's Ex

"When I was at an org party, I saw my friend's ex across the table. He winked at me and I found this really cute. So I went closer and kissed him. ..."

  • The Shift From Erotic To Romantic
    Posted on January 9, 2012 12:00AM

    The_Shift_MAIN.jpg

We stepped out on the busy street of Nathan Road to kick off our Hong Kong adventure.

Logan held my hand, leading the way with our fingers intertwined. He looked like a man on a mission and walked like one, too. After all, it had been he who Google Earth-ed every single place in our HK must-visit list. From all that Google Earth-ing, he pretty much knew his way around so I let him take me wherever he wanted. Okay, that sounded cheesy.

He always stayed two steps ahead of me and I was seeing more of his back than usual. Such a brisk walker, this boyfriend of mine. He never slouches, and that makes him seem taller and leaner. And though I've said this about a hundred times, I'm so glad that he's the bigger person in our relationship--a fact that I've no qualms telling everyone I know. He has direction. This, perhaps, is just one of the reasons I let him take the lead when most women would always think twice before letting their man take the reins.

There we were, walking the streets of Kowloon, hand in hand. It was so...PG-13. I almost had to remind myself that just 10 minutes ago, he was inside me.

  • Oh, The Things You Realize When You're Far Away From Home
    Posted on January 8, 2012 12:00AM

"We're still in Hong Kong," we said in unison as we passed that corner fruit stand again--the one that sells those amazing Mango Sago concoctions that kept me locked in the bathroom for 10 minutes every single night.

Somehow, during our five-day stay in Hong Kong, saying "We're still in Hong Kong" became a tradition. It was sort of saying that we're far away from work, judging eyes (the same eyes that would subtly monitor whether I'd be giving birth in nine months), and everything familiar.

It was almost a test phase for us, to see if we could actually survive living under one roof. For five days, we roamed Kowloon and Hong Kong City, took the cable car to Ngong Ping Village, took the tram up the highest point in the city, and went nuts in Hong Kong Disneyland and Mongkok. For five whole days, we learned how to keep track of our expenses, look after ourselves, and find another guest house--without prior reservations--in the span of two hours. We realized that, damn, we could actually make this living arrangement work.

  • The Welcome "Cartwheel" (If You Know What I Mean)

Like I said, our first afternoon (at approximately 3:00–3:20PM) in Hong Kong was amazing.

The owner of the guest house we stayed in is used to having Filipino couples as guests. He was a short man (around 5'2") and a bit on the heavy side, with jet black hair, a mustache, and slightly pink, pudgy cheeks. He looks like the Asian version of Santa Claus. He was very thorough, and even showed us the complimentary set of toothbrushes (pink and blue!), soap, and shampoo inside the amazingly small bathroom. Honestly, I couldn't wait for him to get out of the way.

  • Flying Lights

The air smells different here. It smells like freedom.

"We're still in Hong Kong," he said as we took a sharp right turn at the corner of Haiphong and Nathan Roads, past the intriguingly busy juice stand that sold incredibly addicting Mango Sago concoctions at HK$7 each.

"We're still in Hong Kong," I echoed as we left the now familiar road where our hotel was, just beside Kowloon Park.

Last night was amazing, I thought. Okay, to be more exact, yesterday afternoon (at approximately 3-3:20PM, Hong Kong time) was amazing. Not only were we able to fit in the standard HK-style guest room, not only was I able to not complain about how freaking small everything was (my luggage, my hand bag, the bed, the bathroom, the door, the floor area...everything was freaking small), not only were we able to give each other a proper "Welcome to HK" gesture (that was the first thing we did, what do you expect?), but we were also able to cover so much ground on our first day in Hong Kong. Good job, Google Earth!

  • When The Sweet Phase Ends, You Ask, "Now What?"
    Posted on September 25, 2011 12:00AM

    MarshalandLilyMAIN.jpg

If you're a big fan of the wickedly funny series How I Met Your Mother, then you probably have a love-hate relationship with the perfect couple Lily and Marshall. They've been together since college and, over the years, it seems they haven't outgrown most of their silly (and sometimes sickening) lovers' ways.

There's the "tell-me-what-you-ate" habit, the lunch hour calls, the six-pack airport tradition, and even the good night song Marshall sings to Lily every single night. Cute as they are on the series, it makes me wonder if there really are couples who are like this out there. Moreover, can these silly antics last in real life?
