Ellen's E-mail

My older siblings, James and Cass, stayed for two months after my mom's operation. When my mom regained her strength, we did what every family does every time a balikbayan comes home: We went to Tagaytay, SM Mall of Asia, and Bonifacio High Street, and we ate tuyo (dried fish) every morning, as per my sister's request.
I was so busy catching up with James and Cass that I hardly logged on to YM or checked my e-mails in those two months. When my siblings went back to the States and I returned to work after that much-needed vacation, my friends kept me busy by retelling the story of how I made a scene at the hospital, collapsed, and woke up on my mom's bed at the hospital.
That was how I missed it.- "Those Who Have Passions, We Are The Lucky Ones"

I'm not a hardcore Neil Gaiman fan. In fact, except for the more popular graphic novels and comic books he's created, I'm largely unfamiliar with his work. Still, one of my favorite characters created by Neil Gaiman is definitely Dream, the embodiment of inspiration and wonder found in the pages of his Sandman series.
During Cosmo's interview with the famed writer, our Features Editor, Sam Echavez, asked him about his thoughts on pursuing our passions. His reply: "I'd tell everybody to pursue your passion. Those who have passions, we are the lucky ones. If you like painting, for God's sake, paint. If you like writing, write."- Hello, Goodbye

If the only thing constant in life is change, then I look to the coming year with both fear and excitement. I’ve never been a big fan of change. Its unexpectedness is always unsettling, and it takes me a while to wrap my head around the idea of adjusting to new ways. Last month's issue on Fabulous Firsts has made me realize even more that change will always happen, and we need to embrace it, if only for the simple reason that it makes life more interesting. - The 2010 List

Our art director told me some time ago that, before he started working, he wrote down all the things he wants to accomplish in life, and made a timeline that specified the target completion periods of each item. He'd recently taken a look at the list again, he said, and was pleased to discover he was still on track.
I realized then that I have made a similar list before--albeit of a much more frivolous nature, as it was for a project I did in high school. Some of the crazier stuff I noted down are as follows:- Own a Ferrari. Obviously, this was before I joined the automotive industry and became fully aware of such a car's total value.
- Move out by the time I'm 21. Was I really so sure of myself that I expected to be financially independent by that time?
- Become part of a rock band. Completely doable--as long as it's Rock Band, the game.
- Publish a book by the time I'm 25. Crap, I turn 25 in 2010!
- Meet the President of the Philippines. I might've written this to fool my teacher into believing that I'm a person of ambition. If I were to be given the chance now, I'll pass without batting an eyelash.
- What Keeps Me Going

The time I spent in college was pretty much divided into two: academics and work for the school paper. The very little free time this left me was spent going out with friends and having as much fun as a college student should. And if you ask me if I regret spending much of my student life working and studying instead of partying, going places, making lots of new friends (and boyfriends, haha!), and other things college folk are known to get into, I’d say I’d consider the thought, but not really.
The need to study hard is a given—I had to maintain my scholarship, or else I wouldn’t be able to afford the tuition the university I chose. But working for the school paper? That was all for passion. I really wanted to write, and to me, there simply was no other organization I wanted to be part of then (although it took me a year to muster the courage to apply for a post in the News team).
Several batches of News Editors and Staffers (I'm the second one from right--and the oldest News ed here, yikes!)
I got to thinking about these things because our school paper recently held a reunion to celebrate its 80th anniversary, and I didn’t dare miss it for the world. A lot of my best moments, both during and even after college, had a lot to do with the school paper: the best friends I made there, the most wonderful people I ever had the opportunity to work with, the training I got from having to produce a monthly paper on top of fulfilling requirements for my classes, and all the memorable anecdotes of what happened in between. It was the highlight of my college life, and ask anyone who was part of that organization, and you’re probably going to get the same response (yes, probably even Luli Arroyo, whom we spotted at the event). - "Those Who Have Passions, We Are The Lucky Ones"
