I rarely reflect on my past anymore. I've written all six seasons about certain stories from my past (and how it affects my present), yet somewhere along the way, I found myself not reflecting anymore, not second-guessing my decisions anymore, and not entertaining those 'what ifs' anymore.

In a way, it's good because there's really no use wallowing over what could have been. But there are times when I allow a small part of me to look back and try to see when friendships started to break apart, when relationships started to wane, and when I should have been wiser. During these rare moments, I allow myself to dream of a better outcome, a better way of handling things, and a better self.

Yes, that time I went to Dagupan with Sam and his cooking squadron, I had single-handedly scandalized and ruffled the feathers of the older generation in my family when they found out it wasn't a business trip.

"Good heavens!" the oldies shook their heads.

"Oh my stars," they touched their pearl necklaces to check if they were still in place.

Seriously, I was born in the wrong country. But these days, my parents are either highly tolerant or they have finally approved of how I take on the world: positively, irrevocably, definitely gung-ho.

I felt that I had made a wrong decision. Somewhere along the way, I knew for a fact that I had not chosen wisely. When you're a teenager, you don't really care that much, do you? When you're young and juvenile, you rarely retrace your steps. Today, at 25, I realize that the reflections start somewhere between college and real life.

Everyone was right. That one night changed so much in so little time. In the Christmas vacation that followed our prom, Al finally asked me that one question I had been longing to hear from him a long, long time ago: “Pwede bang manligaw?”

“All I know was that he asked me, ‘What are we doing?’ and I told him ‘We’re two people out on a date and having a great time,’ and he asked me, ‘You know I’m ready to settle down, right?’ and I went, ‘We have fun together; it doesn’t mean we have to get married right away.’”

Charlie was on a roll, which is probably normal on a normal day when she's talking about a normal topic. But nothing about this conversation is normal for me: we’re talking about a lover abroad, a relationship outside the Philippine border, a guy who’s looking for a wife (wow, that’s rare), and two different religions--none of which I have the smartest things to say about.

    "Naka-maleta ka na naman?!"
Nicia exclaimed when she opened the door of Logan's car and slipped into the backseat. "Ako nga paper bag lang ang dala e! Hi Logan!"

Logan waved and smiled just as I said, "E bakit ba, madami akong dala e."
