  • Ana's Insecurities Part 1
    Posted on April 11, 2010 12:00AM

BB041110M.jpgSix months into their relationship, Ana's insecurities finally showed. And since I was Sam's closest female friend, she went to me with her weight issues. My evil brain told me: "She's making you her BFF, para magkaroon ka ng guilty feelings. Kasi kapag friends na kayo, hindi mo na magagawang agawin si Sam sa kanya."

Wait lang. Who the hell said I'd steal Sam from her? Oh wait, I forgot that was my evil brain talking.

  • Sickly Little Me

pills.jpgGrowing up, I was never a health buff. I find joy in doing whatever, whenever, without so much as a thought on how it would affect my health. I’m a non-believer and definitely a non-follower of strict diets, exercise routines, the 8-hour-sleep rule (or at least, I can't afford to have eight hours of sleep), and the now so "in" organic, go-green lifestyle.

Though very conscious of my body weight, I still chow on whatever food I want at any particular moment--be it a fatty, greasy burger for lunch, a tomato-based pasta with lots of Parmesan cheese for dinner, and a sinful triple scoop of vanilla ice cream topped with a generous helping of chocolate syrup for late-night snack. And when the situation call for it, I resort to crash-dieting to make up for this gluttony.

  • My Top 9 Life Lessons For 2009
    Posted on January 2, 2010 12:00PM

The past year was a soap opera for me—anyone who knows what I’ve been through could attest to that. 2009 began with forecasts that it would be my best year ever. And while a lot of great things happened that year, I’m not sure I can really call it my best, since it was riddled with heartbreaks, betrayals, and loads of disappointments, too. But what can we do? That’s how life goes; it can’t always be perfect, can it? But I do not regret anything, for with everything that happened to me that year, I took with it valuable lessons I’ll bring with me in 2010 and for the rest of my life.

Since there are far too many of them, I picked the nine most significant lessons, or at least those that seem to recur for some reason—maybe because I haven’t learned them enough the first time so I had to go through them again. Here goes.

  • 5 Natural Ways To Fight Sleeplessness
    Posted on December 19, 2009 06:00PM

    02.jpg

Right before Christmas break is one of the worst crunch-time periods of the whole year. It's busy, busy, busy--heaven knows there are few things I wouldn't give to find the world's pause button now, because the minutes are going by faster and faster, and it seems like nothing's getting done.

If you're like me, you're probably losing sleep at night thinking about everything you have to finish in the coming days--which means, upon getting up the following morning, it's like you haven't even gone to bed at all. Against my better judgment, there are actually instances when I feel I might as well stay up and keep working until I feel the beginnings of a snooze gradually spreading throughout my body.

  • How Do We Kiss Breast Cancer Goodbye?
    Posted on October 31, 2009 12:00AM

AAE_Iza_Calzado.jpgThrough knowledge and prevention, that’s how.

All women are at risk when it comes to breast cancer. We should know by now that anyone can be a victim of this disease: mothers, daughters, sisters, and friends. The disease is in fact the number one cause of mortality among Filipino women, with the Philippines posting the highest incidence of breast cancer in the Southeast Asian region. And the pain it causes those who see their loved ones suffer is something else, too. I should know.

As we will all find out on the Avon Walk Around the World for Breast Cancer 2009, to be held on November 8, Sunday, in different locations around the country (read my blog post about it here), there are in fact many different stories, but only one reason for continuing the fight against breast cancer. The good news is there are a number of things you can do to help yourself and others in the battle against this deadly disease.
