Hooking Up With My Friend's Ex

  • One Cup, Two Spoons
    Posted on July 21, 2010 12:00AM

one_cup_two_spoons_main.jpgNothing much had changed in my work routine. I still write a dozen copies for a dozen clients but I have found a great way to deal with office politics.

I’ve always known that I’m one of the boys. One day, I found myself with a new group of friends who keep me sane and entertained five days a week: the IT boys—a mixed group of 20-something to 30-something techie guys and one half-and-half. They always invite me to join them for a smoke at exactly 2:45 in the afternoon and every two hours after that.

Cigarette smoking is dangerous to your health, of course, so I limit myself to two sticks in times of (office-gossip) emergency. Again, this is one of the reasons why I have so many guy friends: sometimes, I find it easier to talk to them and you always get no-nonsense advice. Soon, the IT boys became my unconventional knights.

And speaking of smoking, Logan told me that he had become the sole topic of all Lung Center Talks on the other side of Ortigas where he works. During one of our YM conversations during work hours, I asked about them.

  • Me Versus Food
    Posted on December 30, 2009 12:00PM

SAN FRANCISCO - Thanks to my dad's thin gene, I never had to worry so much about what I eat and the corresponding weight gain that goes with my food intake--not yet, at least. I love food and I'll eat almost anything, except perhaps the more exotic fare that have squiggly, once-alive creatures comprising the list of ingredients. I haven't gotten that far yet.

My personal preferences are mostly Asian and a bit of European cuisines; I never was a big fan of American food. I was last here in the States a couple of years ago for nearly six months, and aside from my aunt's steak nights, the occasional fast-food during road trips, and the diner jaunts for when I was in old-timer mode, I rarely went near burgers, milkshakes, waffles, corn dogs, buffalo wings, pulled-pork sandwiches, mashed potatoes, and whatever else Americans are weaned on. I just don't like how heavily this sort of food sits in your stomach after the meal. Besides, I didn't want to put much stock on the thin gene--I never know when it'll let me down.

This time around, though, I am more willing to give half-pounders a try because of a Travel Channel reality show called Man v. Food that my colleagues and I are nuts about. Basically, host Adam Richman goes from state to state, searching for the best food spots in each town and sampling their specialties for the benefit of all those people watching at home, eating bland popcorn. He also participates in one food challenge per episode, which always involves something crazy--like finishing a pizza with the same diameter as a ten-wheeler's tire in under an hour. It's the sort of thing only Americans will dream up.

Luckily, Adam has made the rounds of San Francisco and the Bay area already, and one of the places he visited was The Olde San Francisco Creamery Co., conveniently located in Walnut Creek where my aunts work.

The diner's old-fashioned sign puts you in a good mood right away even before you get to eat anything.

  • Feel-Good Food

Food is my biggest weakness. It's the one thing I can't resist. Put a plate of buffalo wings with bleu cheese dressing and a hot, half-naked guy in front of me, and I'd probably pick the buffalo wings--then maybe have the hot, half-naked guy afterwards. All my friends know about my love for food, and they know to appease me with it whenever we have disagreements. Although that love has waned a bit since I lost a significant amount of weight, food is still the first thing I run to when I need a quick pick-me-up. Here's a list of my ultimate comfort foods:

Selecta Gold Series Vanilla Almond Ice Cream

    smores.jpg

This new discovery is one you can't miss. The Selecta Gold Series Vanilla Almond Ice Cream was created by Chef Ariel Manuel of Lolo Dad's fame. It's your old-time favorite vanilla ice cream made better by a caramel swirl and copious amounts of fresh almonds. I tried putting a spoonful of Lily's Peanut Butter on a whim and I thought I had died and gone to ice cream heaven when I tasted it. Since ice cream is the stereotypical post-breakup binge treat, then this flavor is your best bet in getting rid of the blues--dollop of peanut butter optional, but definitely recommended.
