  • The Things I Learned From "The Devil Wears Prada"
    Posted on February 28, 2010 06:00PM

    thedevilwearsprada.jpg

By The Devil Wears Prada (2006) I mean the movie, which I love more than the book (and this is not usually the case for film adaptations of novels that I like). And by 'things I learned' I don't mean how to be a Miranda Priestly. There are several reasons I can watch this movie over and over without getting tired of it, and even quote some of the lines (which, I discovered last year, some people are also fond of doing).

One of them is Meryl Streep’s amazing portrayal of “devil incarnate” Miranda Priestly. Then there’s Anne Hathaway’s Andrea (Andy) Sachs, with whom I can truly sympathize. Of course, I also love all the outfits she wore, post-makeover. In fact, one of my favorite scenes is that quick sequence showing her in various outfits right after Nigel (Stanley Tucci) gave her access to The Runway Closet.

  • A Fresh Start
    Posted on February 25, 2010 12:00AM

Nizzi02.jpgWhen my editor asked me to submit a blog for Cosmo, that's only when it hit me: I have been an avid reader of the magazine ever since, as I'm sure most of you are. The proof: my room has a library of the glossies I’ve collected over the years. I've seen all the fabulous women who graced the cover, soaked in all the fashion and beauty tips it dished, and allowed the love advice it gave to influence my life one way or the other. And now, I can't believe I'm actually working for the title.

  • There's A Cosmo Girl In All Of Us

The author (leftmost) with (from L-R) Cosmo's Sam, Zo, Beam and Nicole.

My teammates would all agree with me when I say I'm not a girly-girl. They'd probably even think it's a big understatement. I think having to dress up for events is such a chore and teetering on heels is hell on earth--and they have to put up with a lot of whining from my end when they make me do it.

I don't know how to put on makeup, I don't move around with the same poise and grace as most girls, and on some days, I come to work with un-brushed, damp, nappy hair. Those who've known me for years know that's how I've always been. So, imagine how surprised they were when they found out I work for Cosmopolitan magazine.

  • Working Happy: To Each Her Own
    Posted on October 15, 2009 12:00AM

    maincloudy_newsroom_wallpap_1.jpg

My college (and early work life) ex who remains a good friend once used to find it funny and amusing that I wanted to be a journalist...but only for happy news. We used to joke that, in the event I became a broadcaster, my segment would start like this:

"And now, for the good news..."

Little did I know then that I would eventually work as a beauty editor—a job which was as close as I could get to being a bearer of sparkly-happy updates. What better way can one be positively entertained and willingly distracted than by perusing beautiful baubles of perfume bottles or marvelous palettes of face paint?

  • No-nonsense Career Advice
    Posted on October 11, 2009 06:00PM

    mainthe_proposal.jpg

When it comes to dishing career advice, I’ll be the first to tell you that I may not be the right person to listen to. After all, in the span of two years, I’d managed to hold three jobs and leave/lose all of them within the same time frame for varying reasons I won’t expound on in this entry. So why even offer any semblance of career therapy, right?

But then again, those three jobs were all in New York City, the most demanding marketplace in the world, I believe. And over the last two years, I’ve corresponded with close to a hundred contacts and gone to several job interviews (I’ve lost count). So if honest-to-goodness career realizations are what you’re looking for, you’ve come to the right place.

Before my Big Apple roller coaster ride, I worked in the same company (Summit Media!) for close to seven years straight, working for different titles and enjoying steady and marvelous growth. When I moved abroad, I noticed a totally different work scenario from what I was accustomed to. But along with culture shock, I also discovered common denominators and tips that work across the board and level the playing field somewhat. Here are some useful on-the-job notes:
