When Karma Strikes
Posted on February 6, 2012 12:00AM

Naturally, I talked to Logan about it, who--thank God--kept an open mind and didn't turn against me when he heard that I fired someone on Thanksgiving Day within my first month at my new job.
"It had to be done," I reasoned, sadly. "We can't just keep letting him get away with things. And we lost our biggest advertiser!"
"Do they know you lost your biggest advertiser?" Logan asked.
"Who?"
"Your officemates," Logan answered.
"Day shift or night shift?"
"Er, same thing?"
I sighed and answered, "No." I took a sip of my coffee at Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf in McKinley Hill. "They don't have to know that. I don't want them to worry that we lost a client. It might affect their morale." -
A Fresh Start
Posted on February 4, 2012 12:00AM

They say time flies when you're having fun. Well, time flies super fast when you're chasing a deadline. At my new job, every day feels like a deadline, and when you're traveling from Quezon City to Bonifacio Global City at 9 o'clock in the morning, passing through the daily heavy traffic at C5, every morning feels like a missed deadline.
But, there's something about this city, something that makes my blood tingle with excitement; I've haven't felt this excited about a job since I first started working in Makati City, the so-called concrete jungle. Walking to the bus shuttle every night reminds me of those long walks along Ayala Avenue when I was 24. Of course, this time, I wasn't thinking of Matt anymore. No, I'm not always thinking of Logan either. Most of the time, I find myself thinking of work, my career, and the magazine. -
Interviews And Catch-Up Lunches
Posted on January 21, 2012 12:00AM

It was something I've never done before--do two interviews in the span of two hours for two companies based in two buildings right across each other. If you think about it, what happened to me that day was like something from a recent Hollywood movie where the leading lady had to run from one office to another for job interviews that could very well define her future.
I arrived in Bonifacio Global City wearing the best corporate attire I could find in my wardrobe (I badly need new ones). The first interview was with the international publishing company at an office near Burgos Circle. I got there on time, went through the interview, and was finally offered a dream job: managing editor of a travel and lifestyle magazine. -
Trying To Make Sense Of Things
Posted on October 29, 2011 12:00AM

I told Aldrich about the movies I saw which featured Matt's real name. I told him about how similar the characters were to Matt. He listened. From time to time, he shook his head in disbelief, which only meant that he was getting tired of the same serendipity-ba-'to-o-what line I always brought up.
"Alam mo, kahit hindi mo napanood 'yang movies na 'yan, [Matt's real name] pa rin ang pangalan ng characters diyan," Aldrich reasoned. "Walang kinalaman ang universe sa love life mo, wala ring pakialam ang producers ng movie na 'yan sa nangyayari sa love life mo. Nagkataon lang na 'yun ang name ng bida." -
When You've Loved Someone For So Long...
Posted on October 21, 2011 07:00AM

When you've been doing something for so long, it's hard to not know how to do it, even when you stop for a while. Like figure skating. I've been skating since fourth grade. I stopped when I went to college, but whenever I step on the rink again, I always feel like I never stopped. I always feel that I'm in my element.
That's how I felt when I gave myself the chance to revisit an old memory and feel old emotions. I've loved Matt for so long. I've loved him for years. I've loved him longer than I've loved Logan. I've loved him madly. Years after, it feels as if I never stopped.
