It's been over a month since I got married and I'm loving every single day as a married woman. There are so many things I want to say about it—the wedding, the honeymoon, and fixing up our starter home...but maybe I'll just let the photos speak for themselves!

Our wedding picnic was held at the Ateneo de Manila High School Campus, where Ryan has taught for the past ten years. It was hot as hell, but the big old trees provided enough shade and shelter, and a soft breeze picked up in the afternoon that put everyone in a cool, laidback mood. We got the caramel-colored vintage Volkswagen from Don Roberto's Bridal Cars.

Some weeks ago, the whole Cosmo staff broke out in a flurry of conversation over an email that was sent to me by a friend based in New York. It was about a book written for single women that challenged everything we’d like to believe about love and marriage. We gathered along the aisle to discuss Marry Him: The Case For Settling For Mr. Good Enough by Lori Gottlieb. The author is 40, beautiful, accomplished—and single. In her book, she encourages women everywhere to “stop chasing the elusive Prince Charming, and instead go for Mr. Good Enough,” so as not to end up with the same fate she did. Naturally, that got us all talking about our expectations and deal breakers, and whether or not they could be considered reasonable.

  • Always A Bridesmaid...

...And I’m okay not to be the bride—for now at least. Last year, I was a bridesmaid and a secondary sponsor in two of my friends’ weddings. And this year, I was the maid of honor at another friend’s wedding; I will be a bridesmaid again later this year. It has become a twice a year pattern.

I guess it’s quite expected at my age that a lot of my friends are starting to tie the knot, and it seems there’s that pressure to follow suit. After all, I will be hitting 30 next year, and to many, that means I’m about to reach the finish line. Will I be the next to get married? (I did win the garter game at the last wedding, hehe!) Maybe, maybe not--who knows!

I've mentioned in a previous entry that I'm an Audrey Hepburn fan, and that Roman Holiday and Breakfast at Tiffany's are two of my top three favorite Audrey films. There's a less popular movie of hers that completes my list, slotting between the two aforementioned entries: Two for the Road, in which she stars opposite Albert Finney.

Aside from the use of nonlinear narrative to demonstrate the finer and lesser points of a marriage over the years, Two for the Road is one of my favorite films of all time because it is an honest portrayal of married life through the story of main characters Mark (Albert) and Jo (Audrey), even providing one of the most spot-on definitions of marriage that I know: "Marriage is when a woman asks a man to take off his pajamas--and it's because she wants to send them to the laundry."

Not only his PJs, I wish to point out; also his shirts, trousers, handkerchiefs, and socks. And--God help all married women--his knickers.

  • Weddings: Celebrating Love The Way We Know How
    Posted on December 27, 2009 12:30AM

When it comes to weddings, my sisters and I definitely know how to make it our own. I'm in the process of planning my April 2010 wedding, while my two elder sisters have already gotten married (one in May two years ago, and the other just this December). Planning is not an easy feat (I kid you not, having a laidback, agreeable fiance helps a lot), especially when we want to make it feel like a reflection of our relationships with our partners.

So, after two weddings in the family, it was nice to hear this observation from a friend of ours, who, after looking at my sisters' wedding albums on my Facebook, said, "I can't wait for your wedding! You and your sisters are so creative!" I won't deny it, I'm excited for my wedding myself, but hearing that comment felt like a validation of everything my sisters and I have done to make those events memorable for our nearest and dearest.

My elder sister Chinka, who got married first, chose an Asian fusion theme because she and her then-fiance were missionaries, and she had been assigned to India and Southeast Asia at the time of their engagement.
