When Karma Strikes
Posted on February 6, 2012 12:00AM

Naturally, I talked to Logan about it, who--thank God--kept an open mind and didn't turn against me when he heard that I fired someone on Thanksgiving Day within my first month at my new job.
"It had to be done," I reasoned, sadly. "We can't just keep letting him get away with things. And we lost our biggest advertiser!"
"Do they know you lost your biggest advertiser?" Logan asked.
"Who?"
"Your officemates," Logan answered.
"Day shift or night shift?"
"Er, same thing?"
I sighed and answered, "No." I took a sip of my coffee at Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf in McKinley Hill. "They don't have to know that. I don't want them to worry that we lost a client. It might affect their morale." -
Gossip Girls Rewind

I had been warned even before I signed the contract: I was told I'd have a problem with this one male artist when it comes to work deadlines. I told myself to keep an open mind but, unfortunately, I didn't know just how big the problem was.
The guy's good, to be perfectly honest. His design skills are amazing. But he's always missing work, failing to meet deadlines, and refusing to follow directions. One time, he just left the office without a word to anyone--no text, no calls, no heads-up--in the middle of a deadline for one of our biggest advertisers.
At first, I was scared he committed suicide or something. No one knew where he went and, because his phone was dead, no one could contact him. The following day, he showed up at the office and acted as if nothing happened, like he didn't owe anyone an explanation, not even his supervisor. That's when I first started to see the problem. -
A Fresh Start

They say time flies when you're having fun. Well, time flies super fast when you're chasing a deadline. At my new job, every day feels like a deadline, and when you're traveling from Quezon City to Bonifacio Global City at 9 o'clock in the morning, passing through the daily heavy traffic at C5, every morning feels like a missed deadline.
But, there's something about this city, something that makes my blood tingle with excitement; I've haven't felt this excited about a job since I first started working in Makati City, the so-called concrete jungle. Walking to the bus shuttle every night reminds me of those long walks along Ayala Avenue when I was 24. Of course, this time, I wasn't thinking of Matt anymore. No, I'm not always thinking of Logan either. Most of the time, I find myself thinking of work, my career, and the magazine. -
Ogres And Lame Ducks

"F*CK!" Charlie exploded over the phone. "Hinayaan ni Lily na gawin ng boyfriend niya sa kanya 'yon? Major gaga ha!"
I was home when I called Charlie with news about our college classmate Lily, who resurfaced into our lives amidst a legendary and terrible breakup mess that was Dev. Charlie was still in Mindanao that time and she was itching to hop into the next plane back to Manila so she can shoot Dev in the face.

New Work, New Friends, Same Questions
Posted on March 7, 2010 12:00AM

It was Franco who told me about the opening in this big advertising agency where he worked as a graphic designer. And it was Franco whom I found standing in the spacious lobby and working his PSP to death while waiting for me that Monday morning.
When I met Franco at an event two years ago, I thought he was your average “laking Stateside” Pinoy. Regardless of the simple shirt and jeans get up, he looked like the type of guy who scores baskets during the day and scores with the ladies during the night. Franco and I shared the same penchant for RPGs (Role Playing Games in Play Station) and musicals (Avenue Q), and we soon became friends.
