Chef Nino Returns
Posted on March 4, 2012 12:00AM

The condo was bare. All that's in it were my queen-size bed, an antique table on which the 40-inch LED TV was perched, a low table in the middle of the living room, and three sofa beds (two of which are actually borrowed), scattered here and there to accommodate my guests. Since I still didn't have my own kitchenware and dining sets, I borrowed some from my parents' home. We settled for large plastic bowls for the chips, stacks of paper plates for the pasta, and red plastic cups for the sodas and booze.
It looked like a college house party, complete with a couple making out in one of the bedrooms. I thought that it looked so different from the parties my old friend Sam used to throw at his restaurant. I remembered them because Nino dropped by with tin containers of gourmet pancit bihon, pork barbecue, and cream puffs (with hardened syrup on top) from his restaurant in Quezon City.

Meet Jai--My Very Bold, Very Loud, And Very Gay New Friend
Posted on March 8, 2010 12:00AM
A whole week passed. Sam bought me another shoe rack. As more weeks passed, mornings with Sam became a routine.
It must be fun to have your own business. You don’t have to wake up early to clock in, and you can stay as late as you want without bothering to clock out. On most days, Sam would sleep in up to 9AM, so I had to cook breakfast for two (which was usually made up of fried eggs, bacon/meatloaf/sausage, and toast). But most of the time, I just gulp down a mug of coffee, grab a bagel, and go without waking him up.
My new job turned out to be challenging. I feel the familiar rush of the new conquest and the foreplay-like build up whenever a copy is approved and sent to production. And every time I see my work up there in billboards/commercials/print ads, I experience a massive intellectual orgasm. Yes, no kidding! -
Sometimes, We Need To Create Distance

Sam finished cleaning without another word. Like always, I dried the plates and utensils and robotically placed them on their respective drawers. He opened a bottle of expensive red wine and filled two glasses for us. This moment, this quiet time we share over wine, is one of the many things I look forward to whenever I sneak into his kitchen for a free meal after restaurant hours. Aside from the gourmet meals and expensive wines I really couldn’t afford with my meager salary, I also get real life advice that would put Oprah to shame and enjoy priceless moments that could only happen in chic literature. -
Run Away, Veronica

Matt. I still couldn’t figure him out. In the years that I had not seen him, I have known him only through our conversations, words, and the many times I ran to him with my troubles. And in light of half a lifetime’s worth of information I’ve learned as of late, I began to realize that now was the only time he came to me with his troubles. In the past five years, it had always been about me.

"Where Do You Want To Eat?" And Why This Question Annoys Me
Posted on September 1, 2009 12:00AM
It took us fifteen minutes to find a decent parking space in Eastwood City. If it wasn’t such a fun cliche, I'd never date or party on a Friday night. With everyone out to burn wads of cash on booze, it’s amusing to think that maybe the Philippines’ economy isn’t a disturbing case of negatives.
