Home With Sam

With everything I brought with me, it would take me two days to get settled. My lips were probably turning blue from hunger because Sam decided we take a break. We went to the small L-shaped kitchenette that, amazingly, had a spacious countertop and three bar stools. I unpacked my Mom’s coffeemaker, stole Sam’s coffee, poured water, and settled comfortably on one of the stools as I waited for my coffee to brew and for Sam to finish cooking my favorite cheese omelet—gourmet style.

Moving In

“Hey forehead, I’m here.”
“Good morning to you too, Nose-y,” he said. “I’ll be right there.”
I smiled as I slipped my phone in the right-side pocket of my jeans. I was standing in the small lobby of Sam’s building bright and early on Monday morning. So maybe I looked like Elle Woods when she first moved into her freshman dorm in Harvard. No, I didn’t bring my Shih Tzu, and no, I wasn’t wearing pink, dear Lord. But behind me were three big suitcases, one balikbayan box, and the neatly packed skeletal base of my queen-size bed, plus the foam.

Moving Out

When I told my parents I was moving into Sam’s condo in Katipunan, two things happened simultaneously.
My mom, who’s usually hypertensive, gave me an alarmingly stoic face and called her menopausal BFF, Tita Lexie, and spent the rest of the day organizing a prayer meeting-slash-exorcism for my poor, lost, tarnished (and I imagine them thinking, “very liberated”) soul.
