Ogres And Lame Ducks

"F*CK!" Charlie exploded over the phone. "Hinayaan ni Lily na gawin ng boyfriend niya sa kanya 'yon? Major gaga ha!"
I was home when I called Charlie with news about our college classmate Lily, who resurfaced into our lives amidst a legendary and terrible breakup mess that was Dev. Charlie was still in Mindanao that time and she was itching to hop into the next plane back to Manila so she can shoot Dev in the face.

The End Of Chapter 2: Dear Sam
Posted on June 19, 2010 12:00AM

A week after Sam was laid to rest, his elder sister, Ellen, met me for coffee and gave me a letter that was dated two months ago.
"Sam told us a lot about you," Ellen said, touching my hand. "Thank you for being there for him during the years we were not."
When I got home, I read Sam's letter. "Dear Veronica," it started.

Sam's Final October
Posted on June 16, 2010 12:00AM

I never knew how I made it to the church in Green Meadows that day, but I remember staring at the droplets of rain on the car window as my parents drove me there. My parents knew how much Sam meant to me, and during the silent ride to the church, I found comfort.

Ellen's E-mail

My older siblings, James and Cass, stayed for two months after my mom's operation. When my mom regained her strength, we did what every family does every time a balikbayan comes home: We went to Tagaytay, SM Mall of Asia, and Bonifacio High Street, and we ate tuyo (dried fish) every morning, as per my sister's request.
I was so busy catching up with James and Cass that I hardly logged on to YM or checked my e-mails in those two months. When my siblings went back to the States and I returned to work after that much-needed vacation, my friends kept me busy by retelling the story of how I made a scene at the hospital, collapsed, and woke up on my mom's bed at the hospital.
That was how I missed it.- Turning Point In My Life

We were in our small kitchen back at the condo.
Sam and I.
We were alone, and the familiar scent of freshly brewed coffee filled our small condo unit. It was dark outside and from the open windows that opened to our small balcony, I could hear the distant sounds of cars passing through Katipunan Avenue.
Sam placed his glass of red wine on the table and closed the small distance between us. He was wearing his favorite Ninoy Aquino shirt, the same one he was wearing when I first saw him at the small advertising agency in Makati. His hair was tied in a loose ponytail, his trademark look, and he was wearing the same shy grin that I knew so well.
