Coping With That First Heartbreak
Posted on April 4, 2011 12:00AM

Everyone knew I had the biggest crush on Al. Not just our entire class, but the rest of the student body and the school administration. After all, it’s the principal’s nephew we’re talking about. In high school, there were teachers who participated in their students’ Joe D’Mango love drama through subtle teasing and even deliberately pairing up students who were already couples or at least those who looked like it in class.
When classes resumed that November, teachers paired up Al and his girlfriend in almost every class thing, and every time they would call out the pairs, everyone would turn to look at me as if I was the biggest loser in history. Their faces told me everything I already knew: Poor Veronica transformed herself for naaaaaaaahthiiiiing. -
Veronica's First Heartbreak

When Nicia came back from her week-long suspension, she vowed to make my teenage infatuation a huffing, puffing hell. She befriended the boy of my dreams. It didn’t take long for Al and Nicia to become the best of friends. Whenever I'd see her sit close and talk to and laugh with and hug the principal’s nephew, my 15-year-old heart would break every time because I couldn’t do the things she was doing deliberately. Even if we’d been classmates for two years, I’d never really gotten the chance to talk to Al, not even about a school project. That’s how shy I was when it came to guys I liked as a teenager.
And Nicia didn’t stop with simply being Al’s female best friend. When she found out that Al secretly likes another girl in our class, Nicia encouraged him to court her. Needless to say, it broke my heart to pieces. -
Teenage Vendetta

Remember Al? The boy I hit with the car door? I could never really remember how it started, but soon, everyone was teasing me about him. (Not that I didn’t want to remember; maybe I just did a damn good job of erasing him from memories of my past that I really can’t remember it now.) I liked him since first year high school, all because I thought he was cute.
When you’re a teenager and you make the honest mistake of telling one of your friends that you think this guy is "cute," your little comment would spread like wild fire, and by the end of the day, even your teachers would know that you have the biggest crush on a certain boy. That was what happened to me in freshman year, all thanks to Nicia by the way. -
Flashback: Just Like High School Musical
Posted on March 21, 2011 07:00AM
Nothing sings High School Musical better than my own high school love story. This is, seriously, one of the stories I have tried so hard to forget all these years. I’m not proud of it. To put it bluntly, I’m ashamed of it. In fact, I live my life as if it never happened. But, you can never really do that, can you? To proceed with the present, we have to make peace with our past. So, let me tell you the story of what my high school years and romance were like. We all have embarrassingly nubile high school episodes of our own; here’s mine.
Kung sino'ng tamaan, 'wag maaapektuhan. After all, late 1990s pa 'to no! That is, unless hindi ka pa rin nakaka-get over sa'kin. Charing! Okay, seriously now… -
In Pursuit Of Higher Education

SAN FRANCISCO - The city of Berkeley in California was one of my favorite hangouts during the time I spent gallivanting about in the States in 2007. I'd take a train to go for visits once a week, during which I'd duck into music shops like Rasputin and Amoeba, dig up secondhand and first-edition copies of hard-to-find books in hole-in-the-wall stores such as Moe's and Cody's (which has already ceased operations, as I discovered today), check out tie-dyed shirts and other weird merchandise of hippie street vendors along Telegraph Avenue, and try out the weirdest headpieces at Berkeley Hat.

A walk along the colorful Telegraph Avenue leads you to quirky finds.
