Hooking Up With My Friend's Ex

Some weeks ago, the whole Cosmo staff broke out in a flurry of conversation over an email that was sent to me by a friend based in New York. It was about a book written for single women that challenged everything we’d like to believe about love and marriage. We gathered along the aisle to discuss Marry Him: The Case For Settling For Mr. Good Enough by Lori Gottlieb. The author is 40, beautiful, accomplished—and single. In her book, she encourages women everywhere to “stop chasing the elusive Prince Charming, and instead go for Mr. Good Enough,” so as not to end up with the same fate she did. Naturally, that got us all talking about our expectations and deal breakers, and whether or not they could be considered reasonable.

  • 10 Tips For Independent Living
    Posted on January 2, 2010 06:00PM

SAN FRANCISCO - I was multitasking the other day, keeping an eye on dinner cooking on the stovetop, loading up the washer with laundry, and folding clean clothes straight out of the dryer. A couple of hours before that, I made a dent on my Christmas shopping, got the mail from the post office box, stocked up on groceries, and took the car to the car wash.

"Looks like you know how to get things done," my mother observed. It was a big deal coming from her, because every time I brought up the subject of moving out before, she'd say it's up to me if I want to get my own place--then follow it up with a long list of the things I'd have to deal with myself. Independence comes at a hefty price, as all parents say.

I know doing the errands and tasks I mentioned above does not even comprise the tip of the iceberg when it comes to surviving on your own--physically, mentally, and financially. But in a lot of ways, I'm glad that when I graduated from college back in 2007, my parents didn't pressure me to go find a job immediately afterwards, even if I was already looking for job openings. I was encouraged to spend a bit of time abroad, and in the half-year I was last here in the States, I got to call my own shots and have a dry run at independent living.

Since I stayed with relatives, I learned how to be more considerate of other people, too, in terms of sharing space and coexisting harmoniously. Traveling from place to place exposed me to many interesting individuals with different norms, points of view, and beliefs--and in some cases, I really had to keep an open mind when I talked to them!

Here are some of the things I've learned from the experience. Some may seem trivial compared to the others, but in living alone, you need every bit of smarts in your arsenal:

  • 5 Natural Ways To Fight Sleeplessness

Right before Christmas break is one of the worst crunch-time periods of the whole year. It's busy, busy, busy--heaven knows there are few things I wouldn't give to find the world's pause button now, because the minutes are going by faster and faster, and it seems like nothing's getting done.

If you're like me, you're probably losing sleep at night thinking about everything you have to finish in the coming days--which means, upon getting up the following morning, it's like you haven't even gone to bed at all. Against my better judgment, there are actually instances when I feel I might as well stay up and keep working until I feel the beginnings of a snooze gradually spreading throughout my body.

    The tedious candle-making process

When my parents would tell me to spend my money wisely because money doesn't grow on trees, I really wish they elaborated further. I never knew money was so hard to make until now. Until recently, I was completely dependent on my parents for everything. All I had to do was ask nicely and my dad would give it to me in a heartbeat. Sometimes, I wonder if this whole business of being independent is really worth all the trouble. I really, really miss my dad, but I've learned so much about life and about myself in the past couple of months to believe that there's a bigger purpose behind all this.

Now, back to money woes. About a month ago, Beam told me about her plans of having a booth during the Candy Fair. She knew I needed the money, so she asked me if I was interested in sharing the booth with her. Since I didn't really have plans that fateful Saturday, I decided to join her. She and her boyfriend, Jason, picked me up, and we all went to the Ortigas Megatent together. It rained so hard, that a lot of Candy readers weren't able to make it. While we were cooped up at the venue, news of people getting stranded and houses being submerged went around. To make a long story short, Ondoy happened and I made all of P45 that day.
