Hooking Up With My Friend's Ex

"When I was at an org party, I saw my friend's ex across the table. He winked at me and I found this really cute. So I went closer and kissed him. ..."

It was a day like any other. I was on my way to meet Charlie in Robinsons Galleria for coffee at 3PM on a weekday (more on my meeting with my friend Charlie in later posts). Ah, the joys of being self-employed. Have I mentioned that I resigned from the agency in Ortigas?

  • The Bedroom Blog Diaries: Are Women Born To Help Shape Men?

Over dinner with Logan’s siblings last year, his older brother kept throwing us not-so-subtle hints about matrimony. When you’re seated right in front of two other couples who might as well be your future in-laws, you really can’t dodge the bullets. The marriage talk started when Kuya VJ (Logan’s sister’s boyfriend) told us about their plans of buying a house somewhere in Antipolo. After a few minutes of financial talk, Logan’s big brother started hinting that we should get married in the very near future.

Sabagay, marunong na siyang magluto at maglaba,” Logan joked. “Pwede na.”

Butterflies in the stomach. We really don't have control over it, do we? Sometimes, we experience it when we least expect it.

As for our actions and reactions, we have direct and full control over them--and yet, the moment we decide to compromise often takes us by surprise. Even the most stubborn of us. Even me.

Most of my friends are in super-duper long relationships already. Take my high school best friends Gail and Nicia, for instance. Despite the fact that they’re still on the 30-going-on-13 mindset, both their relationships have survived the fabled “Three Year Itch.”

  • The Bedroom Blog Diaries: "Break It To Me Gently..."

    "Break it to me gently,
If you have to, then tell me lies
    Break it to me gently,
At least leave me with my pride
    Try to spare my feelings
If the feelings have to die
    Break it to me gently,
If you have to say goodbye…"

I had no idea Logan’s sister was such a good singer. So good, in fact, that she did Angela Bofill’s heartbreaking "Break it to Me Gently" justice during one of our many KTV sessions last year. As I sat there listening to her while munching on Chicago KTV’s nachos, a thought hit me: If someone breaks up with you, would you ask him to tell you the truth—the often ugly, nasty truth that would leave you dying—or have him lessen the blow by masking it with a lie?

  • Facebook Riot: The "Logan is Mr. Big" Post

So, I did. I asked our common guy friends if their way of brushing off any talk about marriage is a reflex, a conscious survival tactic, or both. Just as Logan had predicted, most of the guys cringe at the mere mention of the "M" word. Most of the time, men are not ready to talk about it because they are not yet at the point in their lives when they’re ready to take it on seriously. Just like Logan.

Ironically, it’s amazing how mature some men are about marriage. Women, like me, go crazy over the details. Men go bonkers over the expenses. In this scenario, it’s the men who see the bigger picture.
