First Brush With Cosmo: A Fun, Fearless, And Fabulous Experience
Posted on July 4, 2010 10:00AM

One of my Cosmo assignments involved interviewing random guys about a particular topic. I asked Charlie to go with me on my first gig, thinking that her stint in Mindanao would help me. Unfortunately—and quite surprisingly—Charlie got tongue-tied at the sight of the beautiful strangers we were aiming for. And to think she was used to facing men with big guns! No pun intended. Peace, Charlie.

Love Your Life
Posted on January 30, 2010 10:00AM

There are people in college who know what they want to do with the rest of their lives and know exactly how to get there. These are the people who decided at an early age that they wanted to be doctors, or lawyers, or bankers, or businessmen, and then proceeded to map out the rest of their beautiful lives. I was not one of those people. I never had a five-point plan for my future and I didn’t have a clue what I’d be doing after graduation. My fate was always uncertain.
The only thing I was ever really sure of was that I would be writing. -
What Keeps Me Going
Posted on December 5, 2009 12:00AM
The time I spent in college was pretty much divided into two: academics and work for the school paper. The very little free time this left me was spent going out with friends and having as much fun as a college student should. And if you ask me if I regret spending much of my student life working and studying instead of partying, going places, making lots of new friends (and boyfriends, haha!), and other things college folk are known to get into, I’d say I’d consider the thought, but not really.
The need to study hard is a given—I had to maintain my scholarship, or else I wouldn’t be able to afford the tuition the university I chose. But working for the school paper? That was all for passion. I really wanted to write, and to me, there simply was no other organization I wanted to be part of then (although it took me a year to muster the courage to apply for a post in the News team).
Several batches of News Editors and Staffers (I'm the second one from right--and the oldest News ed here, yikes!)
I got to thinking about these things because our school paper recently held a reunion to celebrate its 80th anniversary, and I didn’t dare miss it for the world. A lot of my best moments, both during and even after college, had a lot to do with the school paper: the best friends I made there, the most wonderful people I ever had the opportunity to work with, the training I got from having to produce a monthly paper on top of fulfilling requirements for my classes, and all the memorable anecdotes of what happened in between. It was the highlight of my college life, and ask anyone who was part of that organization, and you’re probably going to get the same response (yes, probably even Luli Arroyo, whom we spotted at the event). -
We Can All Reach For The Stars

(Okay, forgive me if this blog entry would sound cheesy, if not preachy. I just feel strongly about the topic, and besides, Cereb and Red thought that this topic is bloggable. Cheesy but bloggable. So here goes.)
Let me talk about dreams. Passion. Goals. Those big Hallmark words we know so well. I'd like to think I'm the poster-girl for Anything About Achieving Your Goals. When I was 11, I promised myself I'd be a writer someday. At 12, before elementary graduation, almost everyone in my school knew about my dream and wished me well. Teachers sent me letters saying how much they believe in me. By this time, I started churning out story after story, poem after poem. High school was the same story--I wrote for the school paper, wrote every chance I got. -
Finding Your Passion

Are you a crocheting queen? Create a rewarding career out of it!
I once read before that what you were when you were 7 is what you’re likely to turn out to be when you’re a grownup.
Looking back, the things I did during playtime and countless afternoons were activities I eventually made careers out of.
If you’re hitting some on-the-job roadblocks and feel like it’s time to branch out, perhaps all you have to do is look back on those summers you spent as a child. What appealed to you the most? What made you look forward to those days without school? Or what subject in school was your ultimate favorite throughout your academic life? You’ll be surprised to put two and two together and come up with a promising and potentially perfect career mix.
