Just like with skincare, haircare products and routines aren’t a one-size-fits-all deal. It all boils down to your hair type and the level of care your strands need. Once you’ve figured those out, look for the right products for you. This ensures the ones you’ll be using aren’t too heavy or too light on your hair.

Need help in knowing your hair type? Here’s our quick guide:

THICK

You have thick hair if: A strand of hair is thicker than a piece of thread.

You’re prone to:

  1. Hair breakage. Since your hair usually gets tangled when you shampoo, combing your delicate locks post-shower can tug on your strands and cause them to break.
  2. Frizz. In a hot and humid country, your hair can be frizzier and look more voluminous than it already is.
  3. Damage. If you’re constantly trying to tame your hair’s excess volume, chances are you’re using heat-styling tools, like a blow-dryer or hair straightener.

How to keep it healthy:

  1. Wash your hair less. Since your hair is so thick, less time in the shower is exactly what you need. Your scalp naturally produces oils to keep locks shiny and hydrated. Wash your hair every other day to keep those oils and the smoothness, and to minimize tangles.
  2. Get the right haircut. Having a hairstylist who understands how to cut thick hair is half the battle. With the appropriate cut, you’ll need less time to style your hair—meaning, less heat damage too—since it'll fall exactly how you want it with the right products.
  3. Use conditioner that treats extreme damage. Using a lightweight conditioner on thick hair means your hair won’t be getting the right amount of moisture and nourishment it needs to repair itself. The lightweight product just won’t penetrate your strands deeply enough. For something hard-working, try the Dove 1 Minute Serum Conditioner. It’s a one-minute treatment for damaged hair that uses powerhouse oils like argan, coconut, and sunflower to deeply condition hair back to health.

WAVY

You have wavy hair if: There’s a slight bend in your hair when it dries.

You’re prone to:

  1. Frizz. The curlier your hair is, the drier it can get on the ends, since moisture doesn’t easily get distributed down your locks. Since wavy strands need moisture, they tend to frizz on a humid day (to get moisture in the air).
  2. Constant styling. You never know when your hair will behave, so you need a mirror on hand for quick fixes (or a hair elastic to tie your hair up).
  3. Tangles. Unless you want to keep hurting your scalp while removing the knots in your hair, detangle post-shower only.

How to keep it healthy:

  1. Use sulfate-free shampoo. Sulfates dehydrate your strands, which can cause more damage in the long run—it’s the opposite of what you want: maintaining moisture.
  2. Wash it less. The less you wash it, the less dry your hair will be and the smoother it’ll look. Plus, your waves will look even better on the second day of no washing.
  3. Use conditioner that deeply moisturizes. Wavy and curly hair types tend to need more moisture, as these types are prone to frizz. For this, you’ll need conditioner that treats the damage and moisturizes but feels lightweight to bring out your natural hair texture. The Dove 1 Minute Milk Gel Conditioner is exactly that: It's a milky gel formulated with keratin repair actives, which go deep into the hair to repair it, and deliver smoothness and sleekness without adding weight.

FINE

You have fine hair if: A single strand is thinner than a piece of thread.

You’re prone to:

  1. Burnt hair. When using heat-styling tools, don’t leave it on the same section of hair for more than three seconds.
  2. Flat, limp hair. Fluffing your hair means having it fall right back down close to your scalp.
  3. Greasy strands. Since your hair is fine, oil soaks through easily, giving the appearance of greasy roots. Plus, any sort of hair mask or cream can leave your hair greasy and flat.

How to keep it healthy:

  1. Use a clarifying shampoo once a week. This rids your locks of product buildup, which can weigh your hair down and make it look flatter.
  2. Use a light hand when applying products. Whether it’s a leave-in conditioner, hair oil or serum, use a pea-sized amount and apply it to the ends of your hair only. Leave your roots out of the equation, so your hair won’t look greasy hours later.
  3. Use a lightweight conditioner. The Dove 1 Minute Foam Conditioner is a lightweight hair foam that nourishes hair without weighing it down. Made with the lightest level of Micro-Conditioning Complex technology, it helps detangle without leaving a greasy film of moisture, making hair bouncy and smooth.
